Yep, too soft. Here's a cheap and easy solution, if you have a Wal-Mart around: They sell a smallish ball-peen hammer with a mirror polish for $5.44 It'll work just fine for planishing, just remember to tap lightly. You don't need a special hammer for planishing, it just makes it a bit easier. -----...

also...there's no particular reason a SCA spangenhelm needs to have 4 [or more] separate inset panels. 3/16" rod is *not* enough, though. I'd go with 1/4" round, in stainless, but not less than 5/16" round, in mild. I usually use rectangular stock, though, 3/16 x 3/8.
