Yeah, I was thinking of your pic, Greg. How wide and deep is the helve? Albion has discontinued that, haven't they? (They also discontinued their large skeggox! Humph! ) I'm hoping to make several axes this summer. I just might have to do one of those. ...along with the chinese grinning axe, Cairn B...

Um, no. Tell that to Auld Dawg or the boys over at swordforum who did the cutting. I cut steel and aluminum cans all the time. I cut water-filled coffie cans occasionaly without any incident. I carve steel with a sharp chisel, and I've shaved iron with my pocket knife. I've never cut a steel barrel,...

Oakeshotte's Archaeology of Weapons . Accounts of briedox with two foot wide blade. Axe Forum is pretty much a backwater, sorry to say. I wish we could get more members and activity. Pictures of the tomohawks I made are up there, though! They're preeeeeety. =) OTOH, have you SEEN the Grendal??? Jesu...

Are all beer kegs created equal? IIRC, they're pretty damn light when they're empty. How thick could they be? 20 guage, tops? Is that so impossible? I'm also thinking it would be easier to cut it when it was full , or at least pressurised. AT1435 vs 55 gal barrel There's one, and the barrel did get ...

You cant cut steel with any sword EVER! Okay, THAT is taking it too far. Remember the pictures ATrim took of him cutting into that a 55 gallon drum? the Drum was pretty damned cut up by the time they were through with it. All you have to do is start shearing. Too much work, though. Easier and surer...

I think I heard somewheres that yinz can slice a machine gun barrel in half with a samurai sword... Oh god, not that one again. That was a propaganda film made by the Imperial army, and the "machine gun" was made of carved soap. I have seen longsword sharp tests against maille on top of a quilted g...

If so, it's never come up on the archive. Been daydreamed about often enough, but never done. So do exactly what the rapier fighters do -tell the rank and file that they have to buy professionaly made sword blades if they want to go synthetic. Machine the blank and burn in a maker's mark so the mars...

I thought certain those pauldrons were "pinched and folded", so to speak -as opposed to having a seperate plate where the device is set. Oh well. You've undoubtedly looked at the pictures more than I have. They're very fine pieces in any case. ...I never liked the pinch&fold idea anyway. Yours is be...

Actually, I do believe you're wrong about that. The chivalric class, especialy in the 13th and 14th centuries, took a very lighthearted view of personal injury. A man who lost an eye in a fight would very likely personally congratulate the knight who bested him. So yes, if a knight was stupid enough...

Canting the attatchment of a round shield off at 30 degrees or so ought to account for most of the differences in the way the shields are held.

Well, from what the gentleman told me at the lodge, is that some smuck..somewhere let a 13 year old kill one with a knife (dont ask me how I dont know) then the TWRA (Tennessee Wildlife Agency) found out and BAM! No hunting boars with spears...just bows...go figure. But he did seem confident that t...

it may indeed have been steamed. With multiple layers of very thin stock, you can build complex shapes like that. It's just REALLY hard. I didn't realize how difficult steaming wood was until I tried it. Then, the book I'd mocked where the author said steaming is your LAST option, that lamination an...

Sorry to keep harping on this, but this whole buisness is quite new to me (another preconception blown out of the water). How would a leather face be applied to the shield? Glue? and about what thickness should be used? I'd be very interested in experements with these ultra-thin shields, similar to ...
