Personaly, I'm not fond of that terrable PING sound... http://www.armourarchive.org/ubb/frown.gif My first real sword shattered like Narsil after I quenched it in water, not knowing any better. But by George, it got hard! One day, when I'm good enough, I'll forge 'em back together, but until then, t...

I was the under the impression no-daichi were longer, or was suspecting it to be longer when you said "massive".

Hey, whatever. Go for it.

I know it's an electrical process, but I know they did it, too. I don't think the archaeologists knew how it was done, either. I remember watching a video on the terracotta statues, and seeing a demonstration with a 2500(?) y/o sword that's still as sharp as it was when it was made. IIRC, this has b...

I'll second that -I wouldn't cold forge it at all!

it might break -and if/when it does, it'll be a hell of a waste of time and good steel. You ought to be just fine if you can borrow an oxy-acytelene torch for half an hour or so, though.

And I'd charge a LOT.

On the other hand, weld-lines can be astheticly pleasing if placed correctly... Oh, and Robert, the socket on the first spear I made didn't wrap around all the way either. I was smithing it out of a lawn-mawer blade, so I haven't any idea what it would translate to in square stock. Do you thicker is...

No shit, it's for real Owen.
The swords carried by the terracotta statues were chrome plated. Not nickel, not copper, real chrome plate.

Not sure HOW they did it, but I know it's true.

I don't think so, Cheval. Or at the very least, I think that depends entirelon on the specific type of sword. If medieval swords weren't all that sharp -to be used on armour, we would expect pointier, thinner swords with thick cross-sections to deal with it. And we see that! But we also see swords w...

I wonder, if he couldn't be refering to hardness alone, not toughness or edge-holding ability. There's a lot of stuff harder than steel out there -rocks come to mind- but we (usualy) don't make swords out of them because they have a tendency to chip and break and become unusable, not bend like metal...

Actualy, I like Lames 2R and 3L myself. The downward sweep in the middle is elegant, yet understated. Very Milanese-esque. But the dimensions of lames 1L&R aren't the same, and Lames 3L&R flare too much. Finish is good overall. Nice 1st. Destichado -Beginning Blacksmith, Mariginal Bladesmith, Crappy...

Looks good! But a note: a sword shouldn't be hollow ground. Doing this will actualy hinder its cutting ability, becasue of the pronounced "hump" that will form in the middle. As a rule, a flat grind is best. I can't tell from your picture -is there a distal taper? With 3/16th stock, you'll want one!...

I talked to a Marshal about this once. It seems that if you make the bevor like a gorget that happens to cover the bottom half of your head, with the required 1/2" padding, then you'll be okay with the rest of the sallet. You also need to make the sallet pretty "tall", so that if it's pushed in and ...

French Heroes

Going through a few old books, I stumbled upon what appears to be a French book of children's histroy, circa 1920. I flipped though it, and there seemed to be emphasis on the history of the middle ages, and strong emphasis on the prowess of the french. Most of the stories, I could more or less piece...

You can have both! But it would be best to restirict yourself to eras in which we KNOW they had such things. That being the late and early 15th and 16th centuries, onwards. May I point out that religion in the 12th century was qyite different from what it is today? If a knight appeared with a helm w...
