I can say "how fast" depends on outside temps. The critical temperature is 40 degrees fahrenheit. At temperatures above 40, the bacteria (that cause decomposition) inside the carcass double every hour. The meat will spoil before the hide becomes unusable, but it doesn't take long before i...

Hardening problem

Has anyone run into problems with carbon loss, working with sheet? I had to make a 16 ga. leaf spring the other day, and not having HC steel in sheet gauges, I worked it down from 3/16 stock. Problem is, when I hardened it -oil quench- tempered it to peacock, and installed it, it folded over on the ...

WHat we do know, is there is no indicator of a Medieval comparative to modern gymnastics or excersize , but there is the Medieval German gymnasium, which concentrates on wrestling and unarmoured longsword work, and which tyou can see images from in the Wolfegg hausbuch, and a couple of other engrav...

I find an amusing dichotomy between this thread and this one.

Takeda has a point. There are differences in the lengths we make -institutionally and otherwise- to avoid giving offense to different groups, and in the SCA it's weighted to one particular side. *shrug*

I second the idea of carrying it in a lantern. Preferably one with panes of horn (or acrylic painted to look like horn) so that it's even more inconspicuous.

IMO, "meek, retiring, and servile" was more than likely an affectation put on like a cosmetic. Much like the affectation of daft air-headedness in the late 19th century, or feigning bisexuality today -it's an act to make the right people pay attention.

But now... I'm slowly coming back around. You're wise to keep your tools.
