As far as I'm concerned, that's nothing but an old wives' tale -that far too many people cling to, and for questionable reasons. This is NEVER brought up in regards to any other piece of armour, no matter how complex the shape (15th century wasp-waistd breastplates and floating elbows are prime exam...

If I had to do over, I would of ....made the bling out of bronze. You can still do that, Hal. ...well, technically it would be brass , but it's all latten, right? I don't know if you've ever played around with electro etching or plating, but zinc plating is one of the easiest platings to do. Zinc p...

I sort by region and century. What I would really, REALLY like to do is do away with folders altogether, and tag my images with information for country, date, style, type(s) of armor and image provenance; so that I can set a preference and look at everything from the 15th century all over the world,...

No. Why? There has to be a point to using a different quenching medum. The point of brine is that the saline solution raises the boiling point by another twenty degrees or so F, so you can raise the temperature of the tank for a softer quench without your quenching medium evaporating. The boiling po...

m{90957ECD-4B14-4024-B311-BFDB2DA01201} Link works, but you have to copy-paste it. Ubb or whatever forum software we're on doesn't like the brackets in the link and the image won't show if you just chop off the hash back to the .jpg Pretty good anti-hotlinking strategy. Also, I like the hat, and tha...

No they're not. At least, they didn't *stay* there. I've seen examples from Germany, Hungary, England (and I do wonder about that one. Perhaps from a returned condottiero?) and of course Italy. Returning to this topic: when I made my reproduction back in '02 or '03 the pictures from the sotheby's au...

But is denoted by the separate letter in acronym. Populus is a word. Que is a word. Together they are a proper compound word, but in abbreviation both roots have to be denoted to prevent confusion. This is not unusual, they did it all the time -frustratingly so, since it makes many of their inscript...

We also see this sort of exposed banding in Flemish illumination and maybe some paintings in the 15th century but it falls into that great quagmire with earlier armour representation in 15th century art from the Low Countries... Fascinating picture! What does it represent? At a guess, judicial comb...

I would avoid a wire wheel or cup for this... one of the few admirable qualities that I've found with the wire bobs is that they can and will reach into almost wvery little nook and crannie. They can also *make* some little ones, themselves. Which can be very handy if texture is what you're shootin...

Don't sand. Well, not much anyway. Beyond that, that's just the texture of worked metal. There's a lot of ways of getting that look; none of them involve polishing. My guess would be that Ugo thinks the planished look is prettier than the polished look, and loves him his wire wheel -'cause I concur ...

Re: Hi Destichado
Hi there Destichado, I think HF anvils are great for weekend smiths. The reason you think the HF ones are the cats ass is because you havent had a real one im guessing. No worries either way here though M8, Ive had both and the face of a HF anvil is very soft compared to a higher grade steel anvil,...

Exactly how the sleeve of Her dress has ended up inside the mail sleeve is a bit of a mystery to me, though. I should think its because artists draw what looks cool, and don't understand armour. Don't be so quick do dismiss the work of artists who have a hell of a lot more technical ability than an...

Okay, you *could* go with the railroad track anvil. But given that you say you're poor and want a starter anvil, you probably don't have the tools to cut one out yourself. If you luck out or have friends with tools, excelent. Otherwise, go to harbor freight. They are damn fine anvils for the price. ...

Could Destichado please tell us the provenance of that picture is, what manuscript it is from, what it is intended to represent? Cite, as it were. I was being teasing. But what people of the 15th century? Where did that illustration come from? I am not questioning it's validity, however, I do not believe that the male dominated culture of the time had much regard for women on he battlefield as we do in a modern age of recreation. It was simpl...

OH YEAH? er, yeah? YEAH, even? From a two word post I can't tell if you're teasing or not, so I'll assume you are and proceed as if you weren't. =) That picture is what people of the 15th century thought that women in armour should look like if women wore armor. Yes, it depicts legendary events -th...
