Every time someone marches through in one of these threads spraying omnidirectional piss and vinegar, I'm reminded of this comic. Armour -both now AND then- is a fashion statement as much as or more than it is protective. Men in armour should now (and did then) look appealing -which by definition in...

Well that's one you don't hear very often. Essentially, you want to take your stainless and stain it up a bit -break it, in other words. Heat works great. Stick your stainless in the oven and heat it up until it changes colors. Sand the oxide off by hand. Rinse and repeat as needed. Not only will th...

Good use for freon can bottom?
One, two: buckle my buckler! I dunno, was this a good use for a freon can bottom? Not done yet, of course. This was an afternoon's work, one shot straight through after someone mentioned how useless the botto...

Try penetrating oil first. My favorite is Kroil, from m these guys. The stuff literally works miracles. If nothing works, soak it in that over night and odds are the next day you'll be able to take it apart by hand. It's uncanny. And if that fails, you may have to get heat involved. There are two wa...

Again, very nice stuff. Actually, I meant historically, when were helms adorned in this manner? Some cursory Googling has indicated it was used as a part of heraldry, but this is a piece of armor accoutrement I am completely unfamiliar with. Well, it sort of depends on what you're thinking of. The ...

What level of finish do you need? Do you have the equipment or inclination to take them from rough to finished? That says a LOT about the choices you make. Oxyfuel cutting is by far and away your quickest option. Use a circle-cutting jig, or scribe a circle and use a centerpunch to mark out 1/4"...

Yes, that's a field stool -of a somewhat uncommon but certainly not unknown design that pops up every few years, even now. They're primarily meant to be used when the ground is so broken that a traditional four-point folding chair would be unusable. I don't think I'd bother with one, personally, but...

This is nicely made, but it needs some context. It's meant to hold tapered stakes, obviously, yes, but how is it meant to be mounted and used? Bolted to the workbench? To a stump? Clamped in a vice? Your job stops at welding and drilling the shiny metal piece (again, very nice), but how do you envis...

tweaking the helmet size
I made my first helmet almost ten years ago. While it worked, and was certainly "inventive" in its construction (*cringe*), and was rather well executed for a beginner, I knew even then that it was a scabomination. My skills were not up to achieving my expectations, so -mostly because of t...

This is what I have done so far. I used 83.2m craft wire. I'm thinking of using a dremmel to carve my motto around the edge of the pommel but uncertain as to how it would turn out. It turns out very well, just have the right tools. I used generic diamond dremel bits from harbor freight and the flex...
