Just so folks know, I don't have any stake in editing this book -- the website has my name on it right now due to a template mix-up, but I wanted to clarify publically that I'm not involved in the editing of this fabulous book. The website page announcing ARS's promotion of the book should be fixed ...

I like the splicing option myself, but only because it would give me a chance to show off my splicing skills. When you look at the manuscripts that portray crows feet, you can certainly document the knot structure -- getting a clear proof for splicing is harder. Here's an example of the knotted vers...

Concussive wrap shots can be a mutha. The worst pain I ever had from fighting was such a shot to just above and behind my knee (unarmored at the time -- I spent a few hours adding more leather to my cuisses after that. ) The "bruise" I got stained my skin for six months after that... I don't think ...

Here are some late 14th century manuscript images that match up with the 1390s time stamp Sir Angus suggested for the Emprise A few of those images are from the early 15thc AFAIK, probably between 1405-1410, not late 14thc. I think the fashion shift is recognizably different from the 1390 time fram...

Tasha, this is a gift! You wouldn't want to insult the giver, now would you? If Nick says you're a medium, how rude for you to call him on it? Don J, I've just done a search back on this thread, and NOWHERE does Nick say I'm a medium -- he implies that I might be an "extra largesse", but not a medi...

I'm thinking one pre lunch one post lunch. That's an interesting idea -- are there records of deeds done that way? If so, it would provide an opportunity for combattants to be fed in a historical manner, and would give the observers time to socialize amongst their high-bred selves (and low-bred sel...

Aluminum, titanium and plastic armors are not acceptable for the Emprise unless completely obscured like internal splints in a cuise or plates in a coat-of-plates. Maelgwyn, they've already ruled out even covered materials like that -- which is why I raised the stink about visible machine stitching...

I wonder what do you guys think of the current trend in silk banners. The method is not period but they do look awesome. I love the look of them, and it's not terribly hard to follow Cennini's instructions for painting on silk if folks want to make their own and are concerned about correct techniqu...

I cant begin to understand why you think i am in any disagreement with anything you said. I seem to have pissed you off, and believe me, it was inadvertent. I was using the Collective "we", meaning all of us in this discussion, not just you and me having a disagreement. I kind of think we're "viole...

Making a medieval castle in France
Now HERE'S some cool immersion. I know there are projects like this in France where you can volunteer to be a part of the building process... what a cool vacation that would be.

Jehan, I like your list. I can go for that. I can even go for allowing well-done machined applique if it means more folks will have good pennans and heraldic jupons or livery patches when appropriate or whatever. It's not like I have to be in approval; just stating my personal preferences. I'm not i...

My point was more along the line of seeing pleasing and accurate shapes over choosing hand sewing with period materials. I just think it's ironic that folks want the whole pleasing/accurate shape/silhouette achieved but think that it should be exclusive of the materials/techniques efforts because a...

With so few people taking orders for custom clothes the off the rack purchases are pretty much needed. Agreed: there are a number of off-the-rack merchants out there who can supply what is needed, and many of them will do the handwork for extra money and lead time. Just as folks are willing to pay ...

Ok here's what i'm hearing on soft kit. "No visible machine stitching, hand finishing of buttonholes is recomended. Hand sewn 14th century style garments prefered but not required." I wouldn't even say that "hand sewn" is preferred. That implies that the entire thing should be hand sewn, not just t...

I have yet to see a grand asiette made by anyone that shows the proper stuffed breast shown in period illuminations, i am sure there is one out there. I stuffed the GA cotte worn by Kelson at his second coronation. IMO, it looked right. I see more evidence for that look in the civilian use of these...

Just to put the hand-sewing thing in perspective a little, I sewed 30 eyelets a day for three days straight at Pennsic this year so that I'd have a finished dress to wear the next day. That was done in between everything else, a few here and there. It was not hard, time-wise. Buttonholes are only a ...

Okay. Serious question here... I know that while the persons are being vetted, you will be looking closely at the way in which it was made... BUT... is that really necessary for looking at something 10 to 100 fet away? I wouldn't assume that vetters would be looking everything over the way a judge ...
