Banning machine stitching is a bit much. I agree, but no-one is talking about banning machine stitching. We're talking about visible machine stitching. There is a difference. LH-level re-enactment generally does not allow visible machine stitching. If people want to talk the talk... Some people are...

Completely agreed. I just see little reason to spin my own yarn for my fabric. Understood; I wasn't drawing any connection to what you'd written (which does make sense to me: it doesn't sit quite right that the whole sheep-to-shawl concept may be given auth points for the vertical process inherent ...

On visible machine sewing, I am good with that because it is a small detail not a glairing one. Potayto-potahto. You guys don't even want fully-hidden plastic breastplates, but it's okay to have machine stitching in plain sight? Nailing down these requirements to every stickler's satisfaction is go...

Here's another reason to mix things up and have some home-made stuff thrown in with your store-bought stuff -- variety. We don't have a whole row of stores selling furred goods or metal goods, or tableware, etc, all providing slightly different quality and atmosphere. So to avoid looking cookie-cutt...

In reading through these posts, I would hope that many people would remember one thing... According to SCA organization policies: "All persons are assumed to be of noble lineage." Now.. how that person actually dresses themselves is up to them. But for the Emprise, there will be standards. Just a r...

Here's something to consider... if you don't want to buy the plaques or get a fully-made one from a retailer, you could make it a home project for hardly any money at all; all the tools are easy to find too, as long as you're not casting. Galleron was reminding me that many of the extant pieces are ...

Concerning the cross-dressing of women as spectators.... The ratio of cross-dressing 14thc women to every other kind of woman at Pennsic is extremely rare. Gethin, that's an interesting and plausible idea. Galleron pointed out that here and there, o...

Do any of you folks follow Master Galleron de Crecy's blog, A Commonplace Book?

Note another historically-based option is that you can wear a sword belt ---AND--- a plaque belt. The sword belt goes around the real waist (and carries the sword) and the plaque belt goes about the hips (and carries the dagger). Yep. That's the coolest use of belts for the visual effect, IMO -- us...
