re: the musculata-esque-looking chest portion of the effigy: The method of depiction of the individual plates is likely an artists interpretation. If the carver is not depicting what was actually visually going on, then why would he vary so strongly from reality on this one piece of the harness and ...

Informative, thank you.

As I'm currently making a period-style helm liner for an early armet dating to around 1410 (or so Cet tells me), I find myself having a vague affinity with those gals. :)

Meg, I'm a dork. I had that image I mentioned scanned already. You can find it here: http://www.cottesimple.com/misc/French_high_neck1400_smaller.jpg It's huge, otherwise I'd hotlink directly to it. Those ladies are female donors to the church on which the statuary is. While I can't speak to their c...

Jesus, Rana. What a work of art. You said it was based on Arabic designs, anything specific? Is it historically documentable or a mix of styles that are historical-esque? And yes, there's a contingent of fighters whose weapons will be attracted to the shiny gorgeousness, so just get awesome and deny...

That is Lady Catarina Caravello from Atlantia, a friend of mine. The hood she's wearing is one that has evolved from the button-up version of the the 14thc hood. The way she tailored it and is wearing it is solidly early 15thc, Western Europe, mostly continental. (You'd be very safe if your persona ...

Tasha - correct me if I'm wrong. The end result in your how-to, she is wearing a chemise (a tight one) under the fitted dress, and there are 3 seams and a lace up. One seam in the back, one at each side, and you lace it up the front. The gal in my photo-essays does have a chemise on, and then a fit...

Also, Horace, has there been any trouble with the plates ripping the fabric? I haven't seen anything like that but wanted to get confirmation from you.

There was a rip in a fabric-only area, but that was from putting it in the washing machine, right? :P

Meg, Your pictures show a classic pear to me. Your shoulders are narrower than your hips, and you carry most of your weight from your belly downwards. That's pear, not apple. Apples are top-heavy and typically have narrow hips and thighs. The good news about being a pear is that any style that is re...

As for tourneys... so many got squashed by the main war battles running long it was not funny. The St. Michael's pas -- one example of no doubt many -- was adversely affected by a melee going late -- hours past when it should have been over. When it ended, various people showed up exhausted but det...

Hi Nissan, thanks! I don't plan to recreate the brocade or velvet pattern. I'm sticking with the plain velvet cuffs and collar. A solid color is reasonably documentable for this style; I'm guessing fur was the most popular, followed by velvet and possibly brocade silk.

Hubert, I'm pretty sure the fabric depicted in her accent colors is either a brocade or a voided velvet rather than embroidered, but embroidery would certainly go further in recreating the exact look...
