You might search through posts by Otto, here. He recently (several months ago) quit his job and began making armour full time. He has been posting updates in a diary form from time to time cronicling his progress.

Yes and no. A reserve is a way to start an auction off extremely low hoping to build excitement and spark a bidding frenzy driving the price higher while still maintaining a safety net for the seller. From my experience, it generally works better in a live auction than an ebay one although I'm sure ...

He kind of seems to me like he is more ignorant about it than dishonest. I shot him an email saying what it probably was. If he got taken at the estate sale he got it from, he might not believe me, if he's dishonest he might ignore me, he might also change the description/reserve. I guess we'll see.

I will be wearing a metal hat, true. It will be as well ventilated as possible. Part of that plan is the suspension liner because it seems to me that 120° air around my head would still be preferable to 120° air around the quilt on my head. I'm definitely staying away from foam.

Hal, I appreciate the picture, it's a lot like what I had in mind, which is more of a hardhat liner than a thick hot quilted liner or foam. I realize now that I was vague in my original question.

Sha-ul thanks for the suggestion/bump.

Halberds, that is helpful although I wonder if it is enough padding for SCA combat.

Knitebee, I'm getting a helmet made, so I have some control right now to adjust as needed.

It's not the size of the machete, it's how hard you chop the bush.
