I sent them an email in mid December and got a response from them in mid January. IIRC two days more than a month. Seems like email might not be a strength. While we're on the topic of BMHD though, does anyone have any experience with their axe heads? They are pretty sexy but how do they hold up and...

Hmm...Just was noticing. Apparently Sweet Stitcher's name is/was/were Ang ela. It looks like there's a potential scam going back years now. A user just tipped me off with a physical address for Theodora, which stated in the name section of the address: A.N.G. I still need to get someone with Frances...

Comb is where she'll probably end up if she does it. I tried to talk her into the relief carved story, but she feels that it is beyond her abilities. She's probably right for now. She is worried about it it being to dry and brittle, being sun dried and she could well be right about that too. Seems t...

Local War Practice

I'm not too impressed by the editting but if anyone wants to watch a little bit of yesterday's Atenveldt War Practice, go to here. In the Video Center pane on the right side, part way down the list is Renaissance re-enactment. Sorry I couldn't do a direct link.

It's just a few miles north anyway. And hey, if you ever start doing any casting, you can market it as Sigtuna Smelt.

OK, that one was even bad for me.

Hmmm..Wanted to check just to make sure I wasn't blowing smoke, and it appears that I was. Birka is actually believed to have been mostly abandoned by 960ish, with Sigtuna probably taking over as the important trade center in that part of Sweden for the next couple of hundred years or so. Of course,...

I would seriously pick a place and decide from that. As to which of the trading centers were largest someone else will have to answer although I really think that you would be fine with Birka, Hedeby, Viborg, Jorvik, Kaupang, or even Kiev or Novogord if you wanted to do Rus.

Where are you from?
Hedeby - Denmark
Birka - Sweden
Jorvik - Danelaw
Lublin - Poland

There were major trade centers all over the place. In the north and elsewhere. Decide where you want to be from and there is a trade center.

Lammelar was found at Birka. There is some dispute on whether it was viking as it was found in what appears to be a foreign outpost but it definitely shows that Birkan Vikings would have at least a passing familiarity with lamellar and it will give better protection, at least fopr SCA combat. Center...

I would talk to this guy. Lots of nice flint on, in, and around the ground in the McAlestar area. You might also consider getting some obsidian. It's pretty fun to knap and it's easier to see where flaws are before and during.

One of teh reasons often cited for no leather armor is: why kill the cow which is the primary source of your livelihood to get thick enough hide to make decent armor? Where do you get your shoes from? Or your beef. Seems like skins/leather from all of the various little beasties that they ate would...

You just (re)opened a whole can of worms. The short answer is that no there is no evidence that leather armor was worn by Vikings. The caveat to that is that Vikings got around quite a bit, had a lot of exposure and interaction with other cultures and were pretty much willing to borrow ideas from ot...

I think zip ties and planks is more what I'd probably go with although the petal shape might well be more stable. I don't think I would edge the sides of the pieces though, opting for "if it's broken, discard and get another." I might also go with rounding the edge with a router instead of using edg...

The zip strips are definitely not period but would drastically cut down the number of shields needed since they could be remade. I like the leather idea but see the requirement of a press as being a knock against it. I like the glued plank idea overall but they wouldn't be able to be remade on the f...
