For that matter, how many people have been killed by a soft contact touch with a spear to a bare face? Personally, I'm all for face thrusts with authority. I don't see a good solid spear thrust being any more dangerous to the neck than a full force sword blow to the head.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Right now what I am thinking is that it would be a holmgang tournament taking place on a 12 foot square holmgangustadr. The challenger would set the holmgangulog (choice of weapons), I'm thinking sword and breakaway round, axe and shield, axe only, or two swords which...

Standard SCA Rattan and I don't necessarily want them to last an entire fight. I don't want them to break ridiculously easily but if two skilled fighters are toe to toe for a bit, I would like to see at least one of them make it through all three shields.

As a sort of side concern, does anyone know of someone who makes screw together bosses? I'm thinking boss and flange on the outside of the shield with a handle and flange that screw into the boss to hold it together and on the shield. What I have in mind is to make up a whole bunch of shields and ha...

Breakaway Shields

I'm looking for ideas on cheap construction techniques for what would to a large extent amount to a disposable shield. I want the shields to work and afford protection while at the same time being fairly easy to break. Also when they break they should do so as safely as possible. My first thought wa...

Spangen Drape Question

Are there any representations, finds, etc. that support or show mail drapes over the face on a basic (not spectacled) spangen with a nasal or is that just a bargrill hiding SCAism? I'm thinking of using it as a bargrill hiding SCAism but it would be even more cool if it was at all accurate. I'm prim...

Did you miss that dig? There was a ship burial in Tyrersgard that had an obviously important warlord found completely painted in woad, wearing a kilt, fur vest, a horned helmet with a bar grill no less, a katana, heater shield, and thigh high boots.

I'm sorry, but someone's got to say it. That thing is hideous and I would be embarassed to win it on a shield as would anyone else I'm sure. Seeing as how I'm such a horrifically nice guy though, if you send it to me I will dispose of it properly for you.

Assuming it's plated steel, you could carry a magnet with you. Wouldn't help so much if it was non-ferrous though. Take a quick file to an edge perhaps?
