If I understand the rules, the 2 outer fingers would need only minimal/no padding as they ground out on the rattan, but the 2 middle fingers would need 1/4" as they don't. but the 2 middle fingers should be mostly protected by the bridging effect of the 2 outer fingers.........correct?

exactly. Making the bottom 3-4" of the leg attach to a piece of 1/2" all-thread (or equivalent) and have some travel to compensate for uneven ground would be good to prevent undue stress on the joints

All the examples shown appear to fold up into what appears to be a fairly large chest. If you omit the canopy, I suspect that it would be a manageable load for two people. Especially if you added handles . . not on the sides (of the bed, which would be the ends of the chest) but on the ends of the ...

you could always add sockets to the side& use the uprights as handles so you could carry this like a litter. :!: I am curious to see how the archivers adapt this into something useable :wink:

Spring steel can be heat treated to be even stiffer than stainless, so you can gain at least one more gauge number's advantage -- at quite a premium in price, as spring is trickier to work and harder to hammer. Few pro armorers are working in this material yet. just an fyi, there are some armourers...
