I am just beginning to attempt raising and I seem to have a difficulty finding the "sweet spot" where you can get the metal to move without launching you off hand, but practice, practice. On an unrelated note, would you mind if I were to take the raising video to the local blacksmith group...

Re: Vagaries of Spring Steels

the fractures are really localized so I'm not sure if it is more of a "manufacturing" defect in the steel itself or not. This actually sounds like a good subject for a expanded thread..... http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s294/russell_smith93/forum%20source%20pics/RaisingBascinetstressm...

Is the burner pointing down the length or tangential from the side? Tangential to get a swirl effect is better for getting a more uniform temperature. currently my burner is pointed straight down, as I was trying to make a sheet metal forge somewhat like Eric Thing's http://i155.photobucket.com/alb...

that would be pine pitch, a byproduct from cooking wood down to make charcoal, it provides support that is resilient, yet yields predictably.
it is actually greenish in color, but is slightly scorched from the propane torch.

Re: B3

G'Day Has your B3 got the screw down holding system near the blades which supports the metal being cut? If so I would suggest you tape a bit of gaffa tape on the screw down head which contacts the metal so it does not scratch the metal. Enjoy. Cheers Everard after you mentioned the hold down, I too...
