if something is case hardened the hardened layer is only a few thousandths thick, once you wear through that, it might be a much softer steel. which wouldn't do as well

Mr Powers was mentioning the other day that many cheaper files are case hardened, that could be the case with the one you have.

how big was the hammer you were using for the rivets?
it looks like you were using quick rivets, I generally used the setting punch for these. that might also help with minimizing accidental impacts.

Fwiw, Johannes@ windrose had some nifty armour stands at Lilies for sale,& I imagine he will have them at Pennsic for a reasonable price. I didn't see them until he was packing his truck, I really should have gone back with my coin& grabbed one. then again maybe I could catch up to him again...
