microcrystaline wax would be one way personally i just wipe each piece down with lanolin and a rag where did you find the lanolin? other than hand cleaner, I'm not quite sure where to get it. No smoking a helm and heating will not case harden it as the O2 in the kiln will burn off the soot and still be looking for more. If you are not controlling the atmosphere it's rather hard to soak in carbon faster than you scale off the surface---why all the old methods included keeping the atmosph...

if you were to smoke up a helm with an acetylene torch before placing it in the kiln, (kiln filled with co2/argon mix) could you get enough carbon migration to harden appreciably?
