I have a helm with locking cheek plates and I'll never fight with a chinstrap again. I might be being dense here but I'm not clear on how the locking cheek plates make it work without a chin strap? No smoking a helm and heating will not case harden it as the O2 in the kiln will burn off the soot and still be looking for more. If you are not controlling the atmosphere it's rather hard to soak in carbon faster than you scale off the surface---why all the old methods included keeping the atmosph...

if you were to smoke up a helm with an acetylene torch before placing it in the kiln, (kiln filled with co2/argon mix) could you get enough carbon migration to harden appreciably?

yes you can case harden one, but I would still recommend 14 gauge for SCA
