I've had good luck building armour stands with wood. Make a base, then use two uprights about 5"long, at waist level have a horizonal piece between the uprights, at shoulder level use another horizonal piecethat extends abit past the uprights, then one more horizonal (short) coming out of the center...

Good thread guys. I've been trying to get gruber to try forge welding. Once mastered it should be easier than stick or gas welding. My uncle was a blacksmith and forge welded often. The welds were so good they couldnt be seen with the naked eye.Unfortunatly, he passed away many years ago( 3rd genera...

I'd say thats proof enough. I think they tied as well. I've seen other such illustrations. I've seen Barrel helms done this way as well. There is also written documentation on the helms being tied.Something about Spaniards having their helms tied loosely so they would fly off if struck, instead of th...

The same Basic styles were used in France and England as well. After about the year 1400 the aventail was usualy replaced with a plate gorget made n the basic shape of the aventail with a large plate in the front and one in the back (Great basinet). The armour in the met was recontructed from pieces...

I nooo nothink {in my best Sgt. Shultz voice} I've studied armour for 35 years (ok, maybe I just looked at lotsa pictures) and realize what I dont know would fill a warehouse. But I'm learning more everyday. Once I've figured out whats up with all the armour business(like I ever will), and clothing ...

You wanna be a Swede! You are a Swede LOL! I bet Chef may know something about their importing habits. I suspect most of their armour was imported from Germany. I think I have a link to a Swedish site, I'll try and find it. Seems like most if not all the armour the 15th cent re-enactors use there is...

As for getting "everyone" to go along - getting jousters to agree on one thing is like getting cats to march in a parade. I suspected as much, but with perserverence and reason on your side, not to mention the insurance companies. Maybe if it could be explained to an insurace agent, and you could pro...

Sounds like a good plan to me! I've got a 16 gauge spring steel great helm by Mac , its fine. In fact all I ever fought in before was 16 gauge mild ,and used it for years with no ill effects.I sometimes wonder if too much emphasis is placed on the importance of the mass of the helm. After years of di...

Also, if they could be mass produced at one location, it could lower the prices, however shipping them around the world would be soooo costly. On the other hand if there were several authorized makers, say one in North America, one in Europe, one in Austrailia.....it would still cost a princley sum ...

Thanks for your input Lloyd! Do you fellows think it would be feasable to try and get all the jousting groups to come up with a set of specs for a standardized lance? I realize most folks probably make their own, and probably feel comfortable with the styles they have created. It seems like a good i...

Lance rests
it seems that jousters get a great number of hand and wrist injuries. it's been brought up before, but I thought I'd make some suggestions. The reason(as I understand it) for not using rests is that the lances vary so much in shape,ie a lance that fits one rest, may not fit another. Could the shape ...

Ahhhh Thank you Sir! You have been of great help. I'll go with a layer of heavy linen. It may not be right, but it shouldnt be to wrong. I remembered seeing a grommet on some Rhodes armour,on the steel plate like you said. I've seen what appear to be grommets on the Max harness, and another armour, ...

first off, I'm not an armourer, but the 1st thing I ever made was a small patch of butted mail, about 5"x7". I knew I'd never make a hauberk at the rate I was going ...so....I got a bright Idea! I'd make some armour for my cat. I took a retangular dart board target, bent it round to fit his back,took...

Invoking J.A.Gillaspie
Invoking J.A. Gillaspie, for three questions. Were grommet like plates ever used on 15th cent German leather arming tabs? Do you think that the cuisses were lined with heavy canvas, leather, or lightly padded linen? Am I driving you nuts? ...Thanks in advance...Otto

'I have serious doubts that such a halberd would be in use among the French a century later.
