I wonder if the plate was hot when the hole was punched through? Perhaps with a somewhat worn out punch ( no longer round on the shaft?)

Re: Dusting off the cobwebs
Mac, this is incredible work. I too appreciate the closeup pic of the catch on the bevor. I was just thinking about that type of spring catch that holds the bevor to the breastplate. Its basically the same as the latch on a briefcase. I've been trying to think of other applications and cant come up ...

LOL Indeed it did! I must be getting senile. I forgot that conversation! Ahh well. Thanks again for turning me on to the link for the book. It was very helpful last month as I finally worked on several shields myself. I guess I should add the befestigungsriemen to a couple of them. Should be an easy...

Re: Heater Shield Question
I've been wondering that myself recently. While the answer makes sense Ernst, why not just use the guige (shoulder strap) to hang it? It seems easier. I think on late period small tournament targets the straps were used to tie it off to the armour as there were no enarmes. And the laces are similar ...

I think the last small packages I sent to Europe were about $13.50. ( about 4"x4"x6" boxes.) Might be cheaper in a padded envelope?

Wow! That would be a great deal! But if its to big I guess it wont work. Hopefully you'll find what you need. Sizing could be a problem in mass produced pieces. And custom fit will cost much more.

Re: looking for german sallet and bevor, not sca legal
Just curious, whats your price range? And do you want more accurate or less accurate than the example posted by Therion. Which isn't really to bad for the price in my opinion. I think it would be difficult to find one nicer for a cheaper price unless you stumble onto a great deal for a used one.

Dang, seems a bit to small for me. I have a 62 cm diameter head. But it seems the outside OD of 74cm should work...hmmm. Are you sure the OD is 74 cm and not 64 cm? How thick is the liner, if there is one? And last but not least, could we get a pic of the interior?

Re: Safest and Least Expensive Shipping to Australia?
Domestic USPS ins. is ok, its international where things get sketchy. LOL I did a search on rates. I guessed to Melbourne post code 3001 from Raliegh NC. Weight 15lb. 12"x12"x12" box, value $700. UPS was 323.53 at store, 260.95 online. DHL was 317.87 for fast delivery 357 for superfast delivery. Its...

Re: Safest and Least Expensive Shipping to Australia?
Keep in mind if a package is sent USPS international insured, and is lost, you will likely never collect a cent. The USPS will claim the other country lost or damaged the item, the other nation will claim its the USA's fault. No one will pay. I'd suggest DHL or UPS. USPS insurance gives peace of min...

Re: Questions about gambeson stitching
I used 8 oz medium weight linen on my basinet aventail liner for the inner and outer layers. I think it will hold up well. Nice and heavy without being to stiff. I stuffed it with raw linen flax fibers. It looks like long strawberry blond hair. Thankfully I had a small stash of flax from years ago. ...

Re: "Armour quality" steel ?
Yes, but it will be heavier to wear and still get dented up. I had a full suit head to toe, 16 and 14 gauge mild steel, it weighed about 85 lbs. And had many nickle sized dents after a couple of years of use. A med carbon steel about the same coverage, in 19 gauge with heavier mild steel helmet weig...

The composite armour at Churburg S-13 is displayed with a hauberk split at least in the bottom front, but as I took another look the slit looks like it probably goes all the way up the front and is closed by leather ties. Makes me think it might have had buckles originally that went missing. If orig...

Bronze armour was also used in the period of bronze weapon use. Its hard to cut bronze with bronze. Up against iron and steel its not as strong.

Hauberk Question?
I have a hauberk. It was easy to get on, but to get it off, I had to touch my toes and have someone pull it off. I thought if I would put a short vertical slit in the front (or back, As its reversible) it would be easier to get off, by having a big enough neck opening I could slide it off my shoulde...
