We've received the first shipment of flat ring/wedge rivetted maille voiders and collars in, so the 15th C. coats are within throwing distance of being available. In a nutshell, I'd say it would be very difficult to cut through plate. You might cut the steel if its low carbon, but it will only be superficial, not penetrating all the way through the plate. You can always try the period solution, rivet from the outside. Use a ball stake to support the rivet head on the inside and peen from the outside. If you have a good rivet set you can do a very nice job actually. Some I've seen (and done) are indistinguishable from the surrounding heads. Good luck....

Anshelm Arms makes some really nice looking 14th cent hourglass mitten gaunlets that look like fingered gaunts. Havn't tried them, but they look sweet and very protective. You might try wrapping a strip of cloth around your lower legs a few times to act as a padding, that might prevent the rubbing, without cutting the steel.You could have the padding under your hosen or pants, so it wouldnt be noticable. Hopfully this might work....Otto
