Re: great helm torse questions

The white fabric is called a mantle and was indeed used to keep the sun off. They were usually worn in tounaments and most often reflects the main colour (red, black, blue and green) and metal (white , yellow) of the heraldry. I think the originated with the tubular padding worn around the head unde...

Re: 13c-14c helm torse

In the old days they thought the mantle was for keeping rain off the armour. We all know how well wet rags prevent rust on steel. LOL...I figured out early on they were used for keeping the sun off your head. They are usually the main metal and colour of your arms. The colour on the outside the meta...

Re: Mysterious helmet

The 1st pics a bit fuzzy, but it looks like two halves connected with mail down the center? If so, its an Indo- Persian style, I cant recall the official name at present. The second pic puzzles me. Is the hat laying on its side? Collapsed on itself?

Re: Conquistador funerary effigy

I agree, highly stylised. Out of period and likely done by someone who had no real armour in front of them for reference. It almost looks like a Victorian representation to me. ymmv...very odd..The details are kinda right and kinda wrong for 15th cent armour. Like someone went from memory of things ...

Re: WTF is this new paypal 'echeck' crap and how do i send p

Hmmm, mines set up with the debt card. Did you change bank accounts recently? If you did, you may need to reverify your account. They do this by sending two small deposits ( usually a few cents each) to your checking acct. You then need to let them know the exact amounts. Then it should be instant. ...

Re: Does SCA still allow a 15/16 gauge helm? if spring steel

I have to agree with Gruber on that one. I've fought in 16 gauge helms with no problem. I've got a 16 gauge "spring" steel greathelm ( made for SCA use) from Robert MacPhearson. Known as "Mac" round here. Mac wont make an unsafe helmet I assure you! Its sweet! A heavier helm is just fine, And I've w...
