I fought with a big shield for years (average 24"X31") and looking back, I think it was a slight disadvantage. When you block a head shot, more often than not, you cant see around it. When you lower it to peek out, its whack a mole time! As Kerry said above it limits your offensive ability...

WTH? I think I see bone, muscle and flesh! Is that yours? And how the heck did that happen? must be burned as I see no blood. Grinder incident of some sort? Hmm, grinders cant go that deep with a wound that small. I'd almost say dissected corpse but the flesh is to pink! I give up!

I sometimes wonder if those belts were temporarily/semi-permanently sewn to their undergarment. It would be somewhat like the hosen that needed to be stitched up every use. Dang, in the late 50's early 60's guys would wrap their pant legs of their jeans tightly around the calf and sew them together...

Talbot will weigh in on this soon, I'm sure. We had a discussion a few years back about it, and agreed they had some kind of back defense as indicated by the effigies and artwork of the period. I think most likely a fairly simple style backplate was in use fairly early. But none have survived.

You might PM Talbot on the Archive. He has some nice buckles at good prices. You might also want to try making some simple ones out of iron wire bent to shape and hammered flat. Very period.

I agree with Wolf and Jojo, They just dont look like they would work together. Though I've seen the one image many times, I never noticed the problem before. Probably an old association. If by some chance they did originally go together, the hinge must have been replaced making it no longer function...

I've used coathanger wire cut to length with a hook bent onto both ends, or a couple of my daughters elastic hair ( 'bungees?) with a hook on each end. One end hooked to the top of the vambrace ( lower cannon) and the other ends to the cuffs of the gauntlets or straps if the cuff doesnt wrap all the...

Suspension rigs work the best. Its also a medieval solution. Theres a good reason they are used in military helmets and hard hats. Being a construction worker for years I've had some nasty blows to the head wearing a lightweight plastic hardhat with plastic liners and no padding. They protect pretty...
