Indeed, the mail weighs about as much as the helmet. But at least some of that weight is on the shoulders.

Maybe something went wrong in the tempering process. 14 Gauge really shouldnt dent if properly hardened and tempered. Neither should 16 gauge.

A quick search in tomar gives a weight of 14 lb total on one example ( Wallace collection # A21) without tassets. I have most of my books packed away, or I could probably get a few more. They varied in weight. I have a repro ( no tassets) thats about 14 lbs as well. Its 18 gauge. But I think 14-16 l...

Sean has it right I think. I did fight in 16G helm and got hit in the head well over couple 100 times ( I always blocked with my head!) , but it was a well made spangenhelm type ( ugly as hell I made it myself) I was only knocked out twice. 14 g is plenty but will get small dents. If you make it to ...

Hey Sir David! Great to see your still around! Hope things are going well for you. I think I'd sell the old shirt and get a bigger one too. As Gest said, even if you lose a bunch of weight, it should still fit ok. Why is it, as you get older, the extra pounds are so much harder to lose? I've been st...

I think some were made in more than one part, but I was thinking of the " round profile" instead of oval ( like a head is shaped) when looking down at the top of the helmet as in the first picture you posted.

Aurora made a fair model of the stechzeug armour. Its been out of production for years but was recently reissued by revell monogram. The retail price is under $20. Its not perfect, but might be helpful in checking proportions ect. http://www.megahobby.com/1-8theredknigh ... igure.aspx
