I would not go any lighter that that either
I am getting some bending of my plates in a few specific areas that take the most abuse..so I would imagine that 18 ga would be worse.

Kydex is very good and fairly inexpensive... It can be easily molded after short periods of time in the oven, or with a heat gun.
