I was actually -at first- taken aback by the very unusual pommel and the lacing of the grip. It it were not crazy, I'd call the grip as being laced like Tsukaito, and the pommel and guard as being chinese! Can anyone identify the type of sword and pommel? I am surprised Oakeshott did not mention the...

Period sword belt with STRANGE Crusader sword(title changed)
We are all familiar with the now famous knightly sword belt of the 12th and 13 centuries. Well depicted by Oakeshott it is kind of a standard. Sir Vitus has made magnificent SCA versions, of this type. Below is a steel sword scabbard from Albion http://www.albion-swords.com/images/scabbards/tritonia...

Review: Murdock's shoes
After a brief but informative exchange, I ordered a pair of the black low boots offered by Murdock. Period wise are close enough to pass (they are true to period but a bit early for MY period) That being said, the boots are very well made, and the sizing conversation with Murdock helped a lot to get...

Building an SCA Voulge or a Glaive.
His Excellency Baron Jurgen of Ponte Alto encouraged me to jump into the polearm realm, and while I already own a spear, I have my heart set on a shorter weapon (I am definitely not a tall guy) whereby I can not only stab, but also hit with it. I thought about making a Voulge, but I don't recall see...

There is nothing better than free-style sparring in the practice of any combative art. In sparring you should wear suitable protective equipment and go all out. Then you can truly learn the correct timing and distance for the delivery of the kicks, punches, etc. It is a good idea to spar with all t...

SCA legal maille gauntlets? How
So my all maille earlier kit friends, how do you reconcile in practice the need for SCA type protection with the desire to look correct, when dealing with maille gauntlets? Illuminations such as these show what appears to be a mitten, with a leather palm -not unlike a Kendo Kote- and a maille top ht...

Just discovered a "Must Read" book
Gentles, Just this morning I discovered a great resource for the archaeologically inclined. It makes me glad and also makes me want to kick myself in the butt. The book is Crusader Archaeology. m It seems like an absolutely top notch resource and well worth the effort for those with and interest in ...

Rowan, I use a leather handle sandwiched between round wood halves. In the past I've used a plain strap, but it isn't as controlable. I've seen some knights use large handles like you see on barn or garage doors, but then your back to having a rigid handle on your shield. My gauntlets are the small...

Excellent! I made a box shaped shield basket out of waxed leather similar to this design . I used a garage door handle instead of the bar going across like that one. It is very sturdy. I can stand on it and it can easily support my 200 lb weight. http://members.cox.net/stonebridgearmoury/images/oldk...

Damon, Please give me first dibs on the gauntlets, pending size check and funding (I have no idea if I have the cash) If they are the right size (I have no clue as to how to check) I'll find the cash. Also, the legs are AWESOME, it ALMOST makes me forget they are mild.... Let's PM about both. Rowan.

Fair enough. So tell me please what my options are for a non basket grip. I loathe and despise hockey gloves for shields. The bent shield corner dilemma

(besides keeping the nice art, despite the battered condition of the canvas) After a Pennsic filled solid with fighting, I discovered that the upper right ...

SCA Legal crusader conical?
I know this is REALLY goofy, and that the shield probably gives heartburn to Sir Vitus, but,,, Does anyone make a SCA legal version of this type of helmet? I don't have any of the second field batle from Pennsic this year. The vids I seen on YouTube are low quality due to the nature of the sizes. Anyone have footage from the second battle? I believe the "official" DVD of the war is coming out later this month, which I am awaiting eagerly. I ...
