I saw this piece in the Gallery today. Andrea del Castagno (painter) Italian, before 1419 - 1457 Notice the bolt heads quite visible. The shield is leather over wood. The fleeting idea of asking to see the strapping on the back crossed my mind... Hopefully we can feel better about the carriage bolt ...
