And what, by the light of Apollo, is the accepted distance of a spear throw?
The Olympic javelin throwers are averaging 90 meters.... with the world record at more than 100 meters...
Not looking for trouble, just what the actual rule is.
Thanks!

You may want to call the people below and ask more details about the size, considering that a suspension or padding will be necessary anyway. m They are cheap display helmets, but well made and more than suffucient for boffer and fancy garb purposes. Though IOTCUSA are wholesalers, if the people ab...

Someone please illuminate my ignorance: I know the SCA, Inc. is a corporate legal person, and therefore can be party to legal proceedings. Are kingdoms legally recognized entities, (e.g. Kingdom of the East, Inc.) on their own or they exist legally under the corporate aegis of the Society? I was und...

given our excellent safety record to date i think we are just fine. but it seems a number of folks do not agree. perhaps im just not seeing all of these injuries and, if so, have to trust others when thinking about what armour must be worn to protect people. i think we are all interested in protect...

THORGRIMR review
A few months ago I asked Thorgrimr to make me a pilgrim's flask for events. As opposed to a bottel or other liquid carriers, the pilgrim's flask has a historical typology that goes back all the way to the Bronze age and is used will only minor modifications. The basic shape is made by joining two po...

i dont think a physical defect that allows injury should be a reason to create more armour requirements. thats kinda like banning swimming pools because a quadruple amputee rolls himself off the diving board and drowns. regards logan As much as I am a fan of being well protected, I agree with HG Lo...

I was reading Oswyn's post and I wondered this. It is evident that while some of this injuries DO happen, they are exceedingly rare. Armouring up beyond the minimum is sort of like getting insurance, it may work or not, and you hope you don't really need it. I was wondering whether there is a discer...

is it leagal to 'counter weight' a spear? I've started fighting spear and shield and counter weighting my spear would reall assist suing it single handed. I tested doing that with a longer rattan spear and .490 lead round balls from my flintlock. By the time I had the thing balanced, it was too hea...

Well, to Quote Sgt. Barnes in Platoon, There's the way it ought to be, and there's the way it is... That being said, since this is a sport, whether we like to see it described as such or not, the main objective should be to prevent injury in general. Because of the roughness of the sport, the rule t...

Re: Lowest Common Denominator
In the years I have been fighting the 1 thing I have enjoyed about our rules is they protect for and from the lowest common denominator. If 2 inch mandrake tips will be a standard option on fiberglass spears, it may be wise to add to the minimum armor standards. I would strongly recommend making xi...

Aaron, As a user of a one handed spear, I can tell you that no fighter I know can manage an SCA 9 foot spear one handed the way a Greek Dory was used. First the Dory was 1 inch in diameter of light ash wood. Second it was balanced by a small spear point and a counterweight on the back. (see link to ...
