Thanks! I appreciate that a great deal. Now maybe I can yell some kind of challenge before they pound me into SPAM. I know a lot of people would have just considered this whole thing "part of the play" and forgotten about it. But my oaths are real to me, even when they are stupid. I apprec...

For the full-face Italian, just put a legal bargrill under it with the faceplate above. That should make the marshall's happy. I'm wanting to put together a Viking style outfit that a Jarl would wear and I think the etched vambraces and shinguards with hidden knees would make a fantastic addition. C...

Nope. I have to charge it on my own.

That way I can quickly be turned into potted meat and get
to go back to the pickup fields where I belong.

I can try that and see if the marshall's allow it. Heck, not that my attacking the army alone will make that much of a difference. Kind of like the bug slowing down the semi as it hits the windshield. I'll be happy to meet with anyone on the pickup field. I'm relearning some fighting styles since st...

Lol! I appreciate that. Although I'm still not sure if I'll be able to reach them before the young fast firebreathers. But the boast is just a brag to claim to try to do the impossible. It is in the attempt that there is honor. If you can actually do it then that's a big plus. I at least will do my ...

Need to make good on a boast at Gulf Wars

The theme of our 12th Night celebration was a Saxon Mead Hall, in honor of our King. One of the competitions was a boasting contest and many of the boasts weren't very impressive or didn't live up to the period idea of a Saxon boast. So I stood up and boasted that I would attempt to be the first to ...

Ansteorra usually goes by the 4 on 1 rule. It's usually unspoken but more than that is usually frowned on. I remember a BAM when I was King and was the last person alive on my side. I refused a yield, kind of expecting single combats, and when "Lay On" was called it certainly FELT like mor...

I have a pair of his aluminum arms and really like them. I'd love to get a pair of legs at some time. Don't let the word "aluminum" scare you off. These are heavy duty and look like steel. I'm very proud of them. They took a little tweaking to get fit properly on my arms but I love them an...

I've looked at a centergrip and even ordered one a while back but it was really too heavy for me to properly use. I'd like to try to play with another one sometime. Of course, center grips open you up to shield punches and snatches, but those seem to have fallen out of favor for some unknown reason....

And being both broke and non-talented puts a real dent in the whole deal. Especially the helmet, which will cost around $1400 once totally tricked out. My sallet is very nice but doesn't go well with 14th C. The shinbalds and shoulders are relatively inexpensive. The coat of plates and thigh protect...

allow me to point out that a mid-14th century gentleman would most likely have a center point bascinet, not a back point.

Well, contrary in that it appears most people are going about 100 years later lately. This is just getting out of chain and more transitional. I think this is before the current trend in armor which is around 1450 or so. And another way I'm being contrary is that I refuse to wear a waffenrock. In An...

I'm leaving the 15th Century behind and going around mid-14th. Crecy and the like. I'm planning on a nice coat of plates, small shoulder protection, fabric covered legs, Crecy knees, shinbalds, plate arms and, a bitchin helmet. My squire and I will be working on the coat of plates and legs. Master A...

My new War Story: At BAM this year I was fighting along a turned flank when a glaiveman ran past and jabbed me very professionally in the right arm. In Ansteorra, 2' x 3' is pretty much the norm. Some fighters, including a couple of upper level types, fight with larger. There are a lot of rectangle shields, some heaters and not as many rounds as other places. It's pretty shield heavy around here with very few using two-weapon, madu, pole or what...

The one thing I did notice watching you fight at BAM was that you were way too stationary for that smaller shield. Possibly. I spent years being able to block just about anything by a slight shift of my body and now I have to move a lot more. That's going to take some getting used to for an old dog...

I also have to disagree with Sir Corby's premise. I will admit that for years I felt that right foot forward was foolish and only invited being legged or off-balanced. But lately I have seen that fighting and fighters are fluid and ever-changing. Being dedicated to only one philosophy in an ever-cha...

I'd heard that there were fewer numbers from GA this year than earlier. I do know there were no rapier folk as our swashers where quite upset they didn't have any new friends to poke. I think it has a lot to do with your basic stance. JP fights with his sword tip forward and his hand far back, wheras I stand with my fist right by my face and have used sword blocks for years. So if you are used to keeping the hand back and using the shield and body movement for defense then it wou...

Fighting with a smaller shield.

For a bit over a year now I've started fightng with a bit smaller shield. I've fought with the standard 2' x 3' for over 20 years and have now moved to a 24" x 30" shield. It doesn't seem like much on paper but it feels a LOT smaller in my hands. I know other kingdoms require even smaller ...
