so what do people use for blackening plate? Does "mill scale" look good? Anyone use a specific compound for blackening (like gun-blu)? I've seen some forge work that had beeswax applied while it was red, make a lovely even black coating.

jester, that is so cool! I'm glad you're finding SCA legal applications. Even if they must be safe, they make people think more about how to approach their form of combat and widen their perspective. well, the Romans according to many acquired maille from a celtic tribe and we do have maille in celtic burial mounds going back a ways. Maille was the most common armour of Rome (Lorica Hamata, I believe). Maille had a legacy of some 1500 years or so as a dominant form of battle equipment in Europe ...
