Blackening

so what do people use for blackening plate? Does "mill scale" look good? Anyone use a specific compound for blackening (like gun-blu)? I've seen some forge work that had beeswax applied while it was red, make a lovely even black coating.

Noe, Mr. Hand did a powerful class on I.33 last fall during WMAW 2002 in Chicago. I was unable to attend due to other things ocurring simultaneously, but I have a good friend who did take the class. I will see what I can get from him.

jester, that is so cool! I'm glad you're finding SCA legal applications. Even if they must be safe, they make people think more about how to approach their form of combat and widen their perspective. Would a thrust to the armpit be illegal? Works on a lot of folks, especially when the arm is raised ...

well, the Romans according to many acquired maille from a celtic tribe and we do have maille in celtic burial mounds going back a ways. Maille was the most common armour of Rome (Lorica Hamata, I believe). Maille had a legacy of some 1500 years or so as a dominant form of battle equipment in Europe ...

I don't see any taper for the waist. So this doublet doesn't sit on the hips at all? Is the person going to use this to point armour to? Would $200 be "the starting point" for silk like this? What else could you offer? Imported brocade? Image

Hi everyone. So, do you wear padding beneath greaves? I thought it would be a yes, but someone I normally respect for his research told me that in period this is not so, the hose is all. This is in addition to the "blankets" some knights wrapped around their knees, sure, but nothing else? Does the g...
