I think that the desire for plate did not drive the design of the triphammer. Use of alternate power sources (from work by hand) was so necessary for europe, and this was a continuing trend. Wind- and watermills appeared in europe around the 1100s, and creative people used them for more than just gr...

Fiore's fight from horseback
well, I've talked with several people about the illustrations in Froissart's Chronicles (one in the "Discussion Area" from the home page of the Archive). All of us agreed that we cannot make a strong case that shields slung from the neck, ala joust-style, were used in battle. While I am not claiming...

Logan, I think that if the helm fits you, but gives you a brain squeeze every five minutes, maybe all it takes is some tweaking to get to fit great (my mother is a chiropractor that does cranio-sacral work, and sometimes some gentle acupressure here and there helms your cranium form a more even, sta...

I understand that the Persona-In-A-Box essays are supposed to be college level if possible, references etc given. However, would it be useful to make a list of "books to really read" on specific subjects on a page here on the Archive? I want to learn about the Muslim faris, how Templars were really ...

boiled leather on a viking or saxon
I was thinking of a boiled leather sleeveless vest, that would be hard, but the seams would allow you to put it on over a hauberk or such and tie it. Ever been done?

"armour was so restrictive, you couldn't touch your own nose, look side to side, make circles with your arms, and God knows you couldn't touch your toes!" pray tell, we did not sharpened sticks come to dominate the battlefield? Christian Darce's fine establishment sells steel bucklers; http://www.woodenswords.com/WMA/buckler.htm and very nice hard leather bucklers; http://www.woodenswords.com/WMA/lbuckler.htm additionally, design for a buckler of the 1500s can always be found in historical art. Here is a sample of what can...

I think there are several things at work here. One is artistic license used to sensationalize action to the taste of the intended audience. This may or may not swerve outside of any basis in reality, as mentioned with car crashes on TV (or chase scenes, or TV deaths, etc). Another factor is the impr...

friggin sweet corrazina. People have argued about the diff. between corrazina, COP and brig. COP is first almost like an armoured trenchcoat, and corrazina is closely related to it(certainly later period), but better fitting with some larger plates. Brig has teeny plates, many of which were made his...

you know, the Great Pyramid was documented (Herodotus?) to be covered in a limestone sheath that itself was covered in fine red script of some kind. for those of us interested in the manuscripts...
A unique library of medieval manuscripts at Chartes, devastated by fire during World War II and considered lost by scholars, could be restored using technology developed to study the surface of planets.

I think that squires should not be considered by default to loose their horse if they loose a pass with the lance and get removed from their seat. But then, it is affected by wether or not society (principally the squires knight and the knight's lord) thinks that a squire should be able to spend exo...
