Re: Appearance - Fighting footwear
I wear leather boot coverings over cleats. Great support, traction and comfort, and it like knee-length medieval boots from 10' away. Works for me and I'm not planning on changing it.

Re: Atlantia’s Fall Crown
That is a really great photo gallery! Thanks for posting. I am looking forward to another Bryan and Brianna reign. Also, I think that Afshin is going to win Crown, and soon--he just keeps pulling Atlantia's best fighters in the finals. Little-known fact, Afshin is great with any weapons form he spen...

Re: Looking for light fighting gear for my wife...YAY!
Varukh, Congrats buddy on getting the missus involved. That is more of a blessing than you may yet know! I know I used to participate about twice as much as I do now, when my wife was fighting. Anyway, I recommend you talk to Walter at Zen Armory about a good mask for her. You get what you pay for w...

Re: Cut and Thrust video with Sword and dagger - Nylon Waste
Great vid Christian. Having the video camera going during training is an excellent idea, especially if you start to work in some film study as part of practice. I'm doing Hawkwood Howl this weekend, but the Sunday after that, I have obtained clearance (of the spousal variety ) to come on down and ru...

What a list! This is like they just published a (partial) phonebook of Atlantian badasses. Afshin is blindingly fast and will toast almost anyone who gets in the list with him. But he has in the past had difficulties against Bryan and Rob. Bryan is in the best shape I have ever seen him in, while Ro...

Re: Full contact sparring with synthetic wasters
I drove out to Christian's house yesterday for a couple hours of blossfechten with the synthetic wasters, and let me just say that is probably the most fun I've had with swordfighting. The synthetics handle very well and allow for full-speed combat with a low risk level. We learned a lot about what ...

Go with Sir Haroun's leg armor.

If you want hidden legs that are lightweight, protective and comfortable, this is the way to go.

Re: Question for two-handed sword fighters...
Thanks for the detailed explanation, Your Majesty. I fight quite a bit of greatsword and have used halfswording in the past, but this ban doesn't take that away very much at all from the weapon form--halfswording in SCA is only useful in certain situations and there exist other options for controlli...

Re: War of the Wings
People seemed to be pacing themselves to 'survive' that 3 hour long battle. Also, I found that people were being more wary about charging me. I attribute this to the 2" thrusting tips on the spears, which make it much, much easier to shish-kabob even a guy with a big shield who is charging...th...

Re: Question for two-handed sword fighters...
Glaukos, I wrote you a nice long reply, but the interwebs appear to have devoured it. Anyway. I will strike with the bottom half of the sword in certain situations. If an opponent with a big shield gets in close on me, I shift my body to position my right elbow pinning the shield, while my sword shi...

Re: Perception
Good question Christian. It means different things to different people. For me it is the visceral brutality of full-speed swordfighting, coupled with the almost-unique honor system of letting the man you struck decide, on his honor, if you have bested him. It gives me a chance to still get out my ne...

Re: War of the Wings
I agree with the above posters. War of the Wings was some serious high-quality violence. I don't think I've ever fought in a battle that lasted 3 solid hours before! What impressed me was that at the end of the battle, there was still a huge percentage of the original fighters that started. I was ex...

You would be hard-pressed indeed to find a knight who blends technical analysis and raw speed together so masterfully as does Sir Ailgheanan. In that case, color me impressed! I will not write him off again so easily next time. My entire book on Ragnar was based on just one tourney encounter and a few pickups.

1600N fencing mask, and absolutely nothing less. you could probably get away with 800's for wasters only, but, I'd not reccommend it. and never let anyone use a "bought on ebay, I think its enough" mask which does'nt have a verifiable origin and tab marking it as 1600N FIE approved.. I kn...

Protective gear for blossfechten

Re: Full contact sparring with synthetic wasters
I'm just now discovering this thread--I haven't read it all, but here's my take on synthetics. Synthetic wasters are a good training tool for getting people into steel combat. I've handled these and sparred once with them, and they are definitely more forgiving than any other simulator I've used--we...

This game really is a lot of fun. Here are a couple recommendations (not that you asked for any, but if you don't like 'em you can just ignore 'em! ) 1) Don't be afraid to borrow someone's gauntlets while waiting for yours to be made/finished. That will let you get started sooner. More fighting is b...

it always sucks that Crown is opposite War of the Wings, as it's a close event for most of us. I hear the rapier is great! Re: Thrusting in tourney.
Awesome thrusts are fine and praisable, like in that bit of badassery Sir Gemini demonstrated for us. Crappy weakass 'directed touch' thrusts detract from our sport. Moreso than crappy weak strikes, because these get ignored or called light, but many fighters will take any thrust that touches their ...

Re: Thrusting in tourney.
A proper face thrust: m at the 1:48 mark. That's how it's done! As opposed to the Sewing Machine of Cheesiness m 45 second mark where the guy just tries to line up his thrusting tip and poke, hoping in vain for penetration like a 13-year old reject with a 3-inch wang. That video is great on so many ...

Re: Thrusting in tourney.
Max, I don't think we have any disagreement. A wrist-flick offside tink or similar sub-par technique is just as unproductive for advancing our skills, as touch-kill face thrusts IMO. The difference is, *most* fighters will just shake their head 'Light' for a weak flicky strike like that, but if it i...

Re: Thrusting in tourney.
To the OP: No, and no. The thrust is a legitimate shot in our sport--although I will say, I find it a lot more definitive and satisfying to win with a nice crowd-pleasing combo or helm-rocking flat snap (Spear is a different story entirely...to light someone with a legal 90%-force face thrust is als...
