AA Auction: Thai Dha Sword set for Krabi Krabong!
Good morning to all! Up for sale we have the sword set identified on the Medieval Combat and Weapons forum as Thai Dha, used in the Thai martial art of Krabi Krabong (which I understand is similar to Kali) Based on the maker's mark and copper slug inlaid onto the back of the blade, it appears to be ...

Re: #1 Technical Error in SCA Sword & Shield?
Over reliance on single shots. Most mid level fighters can block your single shot unless you are crazy fast. It is important to learn to use that opening shot you throw to either set up a return shot, manipulate your opponent in some way, learn how they block and move, to gain positioning advantage,...

Re: Atlantia looks Awesome
It was great to see and fight you again Oscad! When I saw you approaching in the line in the speed tourney, I was like, 'Hey, I know that tall guy! And here I thought *I* had a long drive!'
Also I agree that Atlantian events really do have a great look and ambiance.

Re: Cutting edges on daggers?
Dietrich, have you followed the development of how one may use an axe in Atlantia? I was making a mild snark. I'm quite familiar with what HG Paul dubbed a "right cross" many years ago, as well as various other techniques that can be reasonably described as "punch" techniques. :...

Re: Cutting edges on daggers?
Whether or not you could get an opponent to acknowledge the blow is one thing. Dietrich describes one way of doing it (but I thought punch weapons were not legal in Atlantia?). You are right, your Grace, punch weapons are illegal. My understanding is that a 'punch weapon' is something like a katar,...

Re: Cutting edges on daggers?
Donal, I've had people accept my dagger cuts at War of the Wings, here in Atlantia, so it can be done. The trick is to throw a proper punch about several inches to the left or right of their face...if you do it right, the blade will impact the grill hard enough to be called. It only happens once in ...

Re: Recruitment Thread.
I disagree completely about the concept of the 'spark' being pure fantasy. Some people are internally-motivated and catch the dream when they first see the two knights in armor engaging in a brutal and fun-looking contest, then shaking hands and laughing together afterwards. Such people will not rea...

Re: Preference in opponents's weapon style?
I have no problem whatsoever with what weapons my opponent brings, even if it's something I think is silly. I have kind of a decision tree for what weapon I want to use, depending on what my opponent brings. If he's got a polearm, greatsword or two swords, I'll use my greatsword. Sword and shield or...

True. I fear when we are fighting it is normally "odd" folks that end up talking to them as they watch. I agree this is not great for bringing in new members. It is best that we introduce ourselves to those watching when we take a break. Show them our gear, explain to them what we are doi...

AA Review: Bazubands by Sir Haroun
About two week ago I received my bazubands, made by Sir Haroun of the Outlands. I purchased them for one single purpose: Because with the surcoat I wear, my sleeves often fall down exposing the blatantly modern hockey elbow I wear on my swordarm. The armguard covers the elbow to the back of the hand...

Re: What the Hell kind of sword is this??
Awesome. Thank you all, for the information.
Based on the maker's mark and copper slug inlaid onto the back of the blade, it appears to be a 'Type 0031' Thai dha.
Now, to take it to an appraiser, and see just what I should look to sell it for.
I appreciate everyone's assistance!

Good morning to all, and Happy Friday! I am seeking some help here from the sword experts of the Archive. Hey Corby, I used to do a lot of fighting like this (backyard fighting with the guys from my old WMA group that wanted something a little rougher than our formalized training). I'd be up for doing this with you anytime--perhaps as a 'demo' at an SCA event, or perhaps just at a private practice. I in...

Hey guys, maybe you can explain something to me. I am with you on the 'bye fights are unnecessary' mentality, and I had never heard of a destructive bye fight, but it sounds craptastic and 'of the Devil'. But why do you guys yield or not even try in a bye fight? I always fight 'em and give them my a...

I think an Atlantian Best Unbelt list is woefully incomplete without Jonathan Blackbow on it.
He is a monster with almost every weapon form. I've only fought the dude once in tourney but I can honestly say I've fought a lot of knights that are not as tough as he is.

The basket is not an illegal target, it is just an ineffective target.

A grass stick is not going to hurt me. Bruise me, oh hell yeah. Injure me? Not so much. Muscle makes great shock absorbers. I have always been astonished at how small of a role physical conditioning plays in many fighters' training regimes. Now, I know that many of us do a lot of strength-training ...

Nope, throughout my career in boxing and now SCA I have always maintained a mindset that I am never going to get injured. I also think the rules in place in this sport make it very safe. A combination of physical conditioning and armor is sufficient assurance of not suffering injury from being struc...

Re: Striking illegal targets
My experience in Atlantia is that when a shot lands on an illegal target, a simple grunted 'knee' or 'low' or 'high on the helm' (for a thrust) is the only response, usually with no break in the action. When shots land low, for example, they are not taken, but nor is a big deal made about it. The sh...
