http://mustang-solutions.com/images/murder_stroke.gif BONK!!! Here's a short tourney vid where I start out in a half-sword guard, until I get inside the poleman's range. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ckvr-0TMMgg In the SCA context I mostly just use halfswording to defend against spears or polearms...

Probably. Two wrongs don't make a right, but responding to obnoxiousness with obnoxiousness has ever been a failing of mine.

If we focus 100% on our contests, on bringing the absolute best and purist fight we can to our opponents, then that is all the 'entertainment' we are required to provide to the crowd. I choose to take a knee and salute when bested--there is no rule that requires you 'die,' and it doesn't make sense ...

I don't find sword and shield fighting to be boring at all. There are no boring weapon forms, just boring people. In Atlantia, the fighting is fast-paced, brutal, vigorous and exciting--whether at close quarters or at range. I don't think I've seen any of the agonizingly-long belly-to-belly flailing...

For tournaments, I fight sword and center-grip teardrop because that is what I am most competitive with.

Greatsword would be a close second.

For melees, spear is my primary form.

In terms of pure fun, greatsword and sword and buckler.

SCA fighters don't bind. It is almost as foriegn a context as winding. Can't speak for others, but I do a lot of winding with greatsword. When the guy with the big shield rushes me, I sometimes use a heavy oberhau brought down onto the top of their shield, then ratchet my hilt up high and deliver a...

Steve: I think you should definitely give it a try, fighting sword and buckler will force you to be active in your footwork, mindful of range and you basically have 0 passive defense so you have to actively attack the enemy's sword with your buckler. Although you never see me use it in major tourneys (my teardrop just offers so many more advantages when winning is the goal), I love fighting sword and buckler. I've experimented with various lengths, but I usually prefer a sword about 38" in length, counting the thrusting tip. That's the same as the Oakeshott 12 classic arming sword. I think. It gives an ideal mix of being able to unload trick shots and feints from range, but still maneuverable enough...
