The nasty thing to do would be to trap her sword when it's inside your shield. The nice thing would be to step forward and to your right, parry the wrap with your sword(don't stop it, just knock it aside before it develops), and wrap in return. Something like a dropping wrap seems like it would work...

.. to answer your question directly, though: Yesterday I was fighting someone in the semi-finals of a fairly prestigious tournament, and we kept hitting each other just a bit light. It was frustrating to both of us, and I, at least, was starting to wonder if I am just being thick, my judgement cloud...

Gaston, True -- but would you be happy to win by a doubtful blow? I would much rather that if I have the good fortune to win a bout, my victory be unquestioned. This is why, if I see my opponent contemplate the worthiness of my blow, I will always ask him not to take it (with a few exceptions, such ...

What advantage does a pole arm have? Range. When do pole arm fighters die? When they lose range. So what do you need to do? Learn to beat sword and shield fighters at the in-game. Don't base your fight around not letting them come in -- because the good ones will, anyway. Base your fight on keeping ...

Try the following: Two fighters (#1 and #2) face off at a comfortable range (whatever range you want to practice). Number 1 leads. As #1 moves around -- forward, backwards, shuffle steps, slides, side steps, all that stuff -- fighter #2 follows. Number 2 should try to maintain the same range -- not ...

Kaganate is an umbrella organization, not an LH group. We're not collapsed, it's just that the two principals are a tad busy so things aren't getting updated. As far as I know, Norm holds a fencing/fighitng practice in NY. I do not think they go at it full force, but I haven't seen it. Bedlam and An...

Brodir -- on the subject of "Russian hats" -- I seem to recall that this might be a translation issue. The original text may say "fur hat", which is a bit different. This was true for the one saga I actually managed to read in Old Norse, but it was neither Laxdaela nor Gisli's.

.. and on the other hand Sometimes you are at practice and working on something new, or set a particular handicap to yourself -- such as "today I only kill with wraps because they are my worst shot", so naturally you lose a few fights, since you aren't fighting your best. Eric,
Duke Paul uses that katana thing of his with a fairly thin tsuba (I think it's a leather disk). It's not over 1.25 inches (more like 0.5), for sure, and yet legal.. So there's precedent.

Dominic -- If they have to think about it (and they are not new and learning to calibrate, or working out calibration on a new piece of armour), it's no good. I find it better to concentrate on a specific form. However, if at some point you plateau or get frustrated with your progress, switch to something new (or old). Then back when you feel like it. When I plateaued with sword and shield, I picked up a 6-ft glaive, and fought with it exclusively for 6 m...

I think most people who like to dress up as knights tend to do that because knights were before guns (which is not entirely true, but we like to pretend it is) It's a pre-modern thing, and guns break that. It's actually easier to dismiss a coke can -- the coke can is clearly outside the made-up worl...
