As a squire, I care little what color belt people choose to wear (well, white excepted). As long as you don't mind telling people that you don't have a knight a few times a day, you should be fine. This might depend on your kingdom, though.

Actually, I'd suggested going all out and making a skirt instead of a simple flap. It looks better, plus it protects your hips and buttocks.

Irish -- can' assist you with the armourer selection, but I would be happy to help with design details and whatnot, Russian helmets are my thing.

For starters, see http://www.geocities.com/kaganate/armour -- look in the helmdb and my article on helmets with Icons.

I use sheepskin. It's very comfortable, not at all hot (at least when compared to modern sport pads!), and doesn't chafe the back of my knees...

Make sure you get the long-haired stuff. You can trim it as needed, but it's nice to have it there..

That's how I (and most people around here) do the shields I make. I generally use aluminium, but no reason one couldn't go with steel. The process is as follows: 1. Drill a hole near the least-abused corner of the shield (that's where the two ends of the edging will meet). 2. Attach one end of the c...

Melee, Should've been paying attention in class http://www.armourarchive.org/ubb/smile.gif . Hard to judge without the picture, but I'd still say don't attach it to the grill. I've never seen aventails attached to grills look good. Chris will have to wear a gorget under the aventail anyway..

You could just let it hang under the client's chin -- see pics I posted ("Thaden bascinet and russian aventail"). If the aventail has those essential triangles that go up to the temples, it should be fine just attached to the sides and back.

Hi guys, These pictures were taken at the lab where I work during a Halloween party (I dressed up in armour for that, but had a different costume for the big party in the city I went to -- armor is just too easy a costume!). Anyway, thought you might like to take a look. The coat of plates and the s...

Do you think the method would work as well for a shirt? The problem with doing a shirt being that it's a big item, and would probably have to be folded..

Bob's a Duke, Brian Price a Count, there's a number of KSCAs, and I think there is a duke on the East coast whose sca name starts with a V who was one of the pioneers way-back-when, doing translations, etc.

Not a great percentage, but a few.

The Sword and shield section of the Clements book is complete extrapolation, not based on any manuals (because, well, there aren't any that show that weapons form!). At that point, you might as well read what people who actually *use* sword and shield have extrapolated. The guard serves to protect t...

Flonzy -- there are many arguments against a wrap being a historical shot, but "it's weak" is not one of them. I have seen the damage a wrap with a sharp sword can do. Once, when I held the same beliefs you do, I challenged my knight to cut anything with a wrap. After he buried his sword in a wooden...

IIRC, There are several SCA people in your area who hold open armour shop nights. You could get in touch with them and make the gauntlets and vambraces yourself if you're interested..
