From what I hear, David Cvet's "bok of the longsword" (or whatever it's called -- available for download from www.aemma.org ) is a good introduction. "Secrets of German Medieval Swordsmanship" is excellent, definately get that.

The basket hilts are very tough, by the way, very protective -- their only drawback is that, well, they are plastic and look and sound horrible.
