Tim --
I hear you regarding skulls and crossbones, but, as a bit of trivia, look up La Compagnia De la Buena Morte (hope I spelled it right). Italian company that used the skull and crossed bones as their symbol -- in 1150s-60s, iirc.
Not to say that this justifies pirate do-rags.

You get your card on the spot in the West -- or used to, they just changed over to a new system. You need to have "most" of your own armour. I am sure you can get authorised at Mission, Clay.

Hi Eoghan, As Sasa has already pointed out, regarding armour you are pretty much stuck with chainmail and scale/lamellar arrangements. Hand protection is a serious issue; I am currently using anachronistic gauntlets, but they are just wrong. I've seen people make padded chainmail gauntlets that pass...

Melee -- in my area, it's mostly 14th century and circa 10th (vikings). Oregon is Viking land, at least when it comes to SCA.

Lots of maille.

Uh, Pheylin, read the first 3 paragraphs on Mr. Strong's page. There is no strong evidence.

Plus, the helmet in the Coppergate book was published without permission -- it was recently found and no tests were performed on it.
