Chef et al, Have you read Claude Blair's article about the Crediton Helmet? A fascinating story about an amazing forgery made in the early 20th century.. so good, in fact, that it fooled ffoulkes and Mann, some of the leading authorities on armour of their time. Some of those forgers had truly great...

No, he never got it back. As Griffin pointed out, Tyr losing a hand is part of a general trend of the Gods being somehow incomplete -- a sort of natural consequence of the fact that the world they created was started with killing a family member (Ymir was related to Odin). In that vein, Heimdallr do...

Definitely a great topic, and Sir Richard's and Hjalmr's answers are very helpful. For me, the key to getting the "gaze" Sir Richard talks about was reading Musashi. No, really. I haven't picked the book up in a few months, and now I see my concentration drifting -- I start focusing on head, shoulde...

Sorry, read your disclaimer, but it still doesn't look much like a sallet to me.. The tail could flare out further back; the lower part of the visor should be a bit slimmer, I think. I like the way you did the lip on it, btw. The main issue I think is that on most period sallets I've seen, the botto...

Riveted/welded aventails at Estrella
I might have a couple at Estrella assuming they don't all sell before I get there. These are mild steel, beautiful aventails with small (1 cm) rings and quality much higher than the average Indian stuff you see (not wedge rievts, though). They were made by Russian reenactors. The cost is $250. A sca...

Rainald, I would hate to see your patterns go. If you are against people selling armour they make from your patterns, why not put a coypleft/permission to use paragraph on them? Something along the lines of "the information contained herein is sole intellectual property of (your real name). It is ma...

Russ -- just an FYI for when you want to use the period arrowheads.. my roommate has been doing traditional archery since he was a wee boy, and he maintains that if you look carefully, you can find fairly good arrow shafts in form of hardware dowels. Treat them, die them, fletch them, make them unre...

Hi Norm, No tthat I've even gotten as far as you have, but.. I think your main dilemma is how to keep them enfused while not sacrificing the authenticity and "integrity" of the group, right? Main problem being that they have no idea what you mean by all this authenticity stuff when jeans, boots, and...

Oh, and for Edward -- it felt great! Not that different from the usual basket hilt sword. Some slight differences in the way it moves when you change the trajectories -- a little more torque needs to be applied. Also, my hand got tired from gripping it fairly quick, but it's posible that I was choki...

Well, I think the bolt being brass was a major part of the problem http://www.armourarchive.org/ubb/smile.gif . I am definately happy with the product, just kinda bummed that I have to drill the dang bolt out! I also used contact cement insead of wood putty -- will try that next time. Roderick, no n...

Trouble with Mandrake fittings
So gang, here's a hint -- do not use a brass bolt for the pommel! I used my cross-hilted sword for the first time last night and the bolt BROKE , sending the pommel flying through the air. Now I have to get the other half of the bolt out of the rattan, fill the hole, drill a new one... this sorta su...
