that's a great face -- very much like the polovetz helmet on redkaganate (did you use that helm as a reference, or just a happy coincidence?)

Good job

Duke Rolf was inspired by Lady Rhodry ferch Arianwyn.
Duke Hauoc was inspired by Countess Ginevera da Ravenna.

Here's a photo from a crown in 2003:

This device is regularly placed in the center of the field at Crowns, but normally its use isn't formailized like it was this time.

Duke Rolf victorious over Duke Hauoc (who was using the tinies heater ever, barely bigger than his palm -- as King Radnor put it, "An inspiring performance. So much Hauoc, so little shield.") Viscount Titus in the semis. Duke Henrik von Havn entered the lists, to much admiration. Lady Bolverk (Knigh...

We were forced to use the parking lot -- you will notice the lush grass field in the background, which was the actual event site. Sadly, due to abnormal amount of rain, it was so soggy the property owners didn't want us tearing it up.

I come down on the unpadded polearms sucketh side. I will leave safety alone as any weapon can be used unsafely, some do have more potential though.... Like ones where all mass is concentrated at the very end of the weapon, that one needs to swing hard enough to move people in order for them to not...

To make a unpadded polearm that therefore mimics a "real weapons" handling characteristics only requires buying 1.5" rattan, shaving down the sides of the handle area (which also helps with flat/edge orientation), and then leaving the head unshaved. Whala! Balanced properly (i.e. head heavy), good ...

A fighter with two swords kind of knows that if you have a spear, that's where you are going, so if he's good, you are not getting that thrust, he has a cross-block prepped and ready. Feel out which arm is most likely to move, fake thrust to center, hook around to the blocking arm that is now moving...

I won 2 Coronets wearing a welded mail shirt (first time around, with steel lamellar, second, just a kidney belt).

No Crowns yet . Closest I've gotten to that is quarter-finals -- but the mail had nothing to do with that, just plain old lack of skill :-).

www.zweihammer.com sells kits that let you build your own gauntlets for a fraction of the price.

I made his website, and he's made some of the armor I wear, so I am biased -- but do a search on the archive and you will see that zweihammer has a great reputation.

I have a pair like that made by Erick Helmschmiedt (photos www.zweihammer.com in the "other projects" gallery). They are made to fit, and do not spin or open up the back of the elbow. Guys, putting together a helmet from a kit, and patterning, cutting out, deburring, etc, all the parts yourself are two completely different things. That's why Zweihammer's kits sell that well -- the cost is a fraction of what you would invest into making the pattern, etc, yourself. A lot of time an...
