JP -- yeah, just like when we get hit with a rattan sword on the shin.

Plate is proof at GWW this year, I think that's a better rule.

Hi Wulfe, a few of comments. 1. I am not clear on how capturing happens. When we have tournaments with capture out here, being captured means getting struck in the head or body (equivalent to "getting killed" in regular melees). You seem to have room for both. Make sure that the capturing mechanism ...

The short version is -- there is no such thing as Russian heraldry for the SCA period.

So just come up with designs that say "russian" to your aesthetic.

Ok, I asked the man himself -- Duke Paul won one crown with a glaive, and the rest were florentine, sword and shield, or a combination thereof.

Hi Russ, I'll bet he has clear plastic edging or something.. For SCA, the purpose of edging is to prolong the life of the shield and of the swords that hit it. There's no society-wide thickness requirement or anything. Now, the shield itself being made of rawhide (is that what you are saying by rawh...

It means that plate is proof to arrows and similar projectiles (plate being defined as metal, so a plastic "breastplate" is not plate).

Regular fighting is not affected by this.

I think trying to reason it out by judging how much impact a touch to the face would do, etc, is overdoing it. The simple fact of it is, when we fight, we expect to get hit with a certain amount of force -- "a hit, a very palpable hit." There is satisfaction in yielding a fight after being struck wi...

I've told the story on these pages, but here it is again: At my first Estrella, we were fighting in the ravine. Duke Paul of Bellatrix is a very good and patient teacher.
Jarl Ragnarr Beowulf is also exceptionally good as a trainer -- I am told he was taught by Sir Wulf Sagen von Ostensee, who's a legendary teacher (legendary to us, he's active elsewhere).

Naturally, this is a pretty biased list.. West Kingdom Sword and shield -- Duke Jade Sword and Buckler -- Earl Hansa Sword and Dagger -- Earl Hansa Axe/mace and shield -- almost never see it. Duke Rolf, I guess. Two weapon -- Duke Fabian Bastard sword -- Duke Paul or Sir Colin Great sword -- Duke Pa...
