I dunno, Matt..
I have found that a couple of glasses of vodka really help me in the later rounds. Must be the years in Russia.

I guess Sir Samuel forgot who held the only bale the Middle got in the Allied Champion's battle, who broke through the East's castle first when the Middle attacked, and who kept the same side of the castle when Middle defended while the rest of the army got overrun..

The Irish national sport, Hurley, recently became very popular among the fighters out here in the West. A bunch of us got the equipment and started playing -- with no real trainers, experienced players, just what info we could get from the internet and friends of friends who used to play when they w...

Don't believe those who tell you that you can't win wearing real armour. I won my Coronet wearing a full mail shirt, steel lamellar, hidden steel legs, the whole deal (<a href=http://history.westkingdom.org/Year37/Photos/MSC08.htm>here's a pic</a>). And I went through a lot of padboys to get there. ...

The authenticity part came from the fact that you are posting on the authenticity board.
There's a fighting board, which does seem more suited to your particular interests.

Drachus -- Vikings would be earlier than that. Which group are you in? If you are in the SCA, you can pick from a good 10 centuries, 6-16 (the lower bound is subject to debate). Try this -- go to http://moas.atlantia.sca.org/topics/clot.htm, scroll down to the "Early Periods" section, and from there...

Someone else came up with the analogy, but I'll borrow it -- What's wrong with playing football when all your teammates are playing Basketball? Fighting is great. Oh, oh, one more thing -- really neat things happen if instead of doing hard blocks you slide things off and use your sword positioning to wreak havoc. Much of it is like Animal said -- you gotta do what you gotta do. However, sword blocks do set you up for some really nice attacks. Imagine two same-handed opponents. Both in some high style, for the sake of the argument -- sword hands are above the shoulder. Fighter A throws a sword-side blow at B ...
