(beg) hardening steel?

While making the gauntlets from the pattern archive, I discovered something. I have a bunch of scrap sheet metal, 14 gauge. Now that seems a little heavy for gauntlets - but I am more doing this as practice than functionality at this point. The metal was free... BUT - it seems soft. I mean little ha...

I didn't want to give it away or nobody would read http://www.armourarchive.org/ubb/wink.gif I am jumping straight into the fire.. trying to make the finger gauntlets that are patterned in the pattern section. (1) How do you form the curved parts? The don't look dished because the are still flat, ju...

suprisingly - yes. Our kingdom is trying to take an aggresive stance for appearance on the field. Our E.M. published "suggested appearance standards" and those are quickly on the track to being kingdom law. Its slow, but there is some very positive progress to looking better on the field in Meridies.

The use of hockey gloves and the requirements for gauntlets are seperate acceptable alternatives to hand protection. The reason is that hockey gloves have thick padding that cushion the blow, where as *most* gauntlets don't, so therefore something has to disipate the blow other than the fingers/hand...

I fight with a kite. My bigger "war" shield is a kite - it is strapped with leather in a square pattern. I have a smaller kite-ish type shield that is center grip. My big shield requires work to use because its leather straps, so it pivots and is not rigid. Once you get the hang of it though its not...

I'll try to throw a few odds-n-ends out there. Torch -- always be ready to light the torch before you turn on the gases. Even a few second delay can be painfully disastrous. Torch -- after turning off the torch, remember the nozzle is still quite warm. don't set it on or near anything flammable. Wel...

I find cutting 2 half moons into the wood so that the handle is actually part of the wood works best for me. I then put foam on either side for comfort and either tape around or sew garmet-grade leather around it. I have never had one break.

pultruded fiberglass is used some in the petroleum industry because its construction holds well under pressures of earth. It is used like waterpipe from a tank to a pump. As a fellow flat-top helm wearer, I suggest 14 ga. on top. The reason is for less maintenance. You will find that a flat top is a magnet for straight down head shots. People love to hit you flat on top of the head. And since it *is* flat, it will not glance, but rather take the full brunt of the blo...
