Re: Mac's blog

Nice tooling Mac. Thanks! Had you considered using a non-period tool? I would use a jewelers saw to remove the material on the edges. It's like using a really insanely fine file, and while you will need to use files to get the edge bevels right, the saw could do the bulk removal quite easily. I wil...

Re: Mac's blog

OK... I'm back to work on the Gothic gauntlets. Last night I started sketching the pierced work onto the gauntlets to get a sense of the scale. When I was satisfied that it was about right, I made up a little test piece. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/i16V9huo84Fzkagb5fB6hSwe2kPiOGaHWrxLlY6IR-NK4...

Ian, Are you planning to take one of each of these pics for everyone who tries on the helmet? While more is better, that's a lot of pics. If you thought to reduce the number at all, I think I would eliminate the head tilt pics. The arm raise pics pretty much make the head tilts redundant, I think. A...

Thanks Mac - the cuisses on the Mantova B2 looked like they were sitting a bit low (from the front view) so your commentary on where the wrapper should sit was very useful. I'm still confused when I see re-enactors using milanese leg harnesses and try to get the same coverage as gothic legs - they ...

Re: Cuisse construction - tips appreciated

I think the earlier cuisses, like the D'Arco and the Avent are a bit easier to make than the later ones. There's less of that weird twisty thing going on with the upper lame. It seems like the upper plate should just about cover the great trochantar, and the upper edge of the back/wrap plate or plat...

Standing with a spear/lance under the arm may well be close enough. I see that all that saddle stuff just complicates things and makes it take too long.

Iirc Ian has a brand new repro of the Henry V's saddle from his funerary achievements. Dang! If that's the case (and he's willing to let people sit in it) I should have brought my saddle stand as well. There was certainly room in the van for it. https://i.pinimg.com/564x/f6/42/ee/f642eeba6b58657da9...

Even if the pauldrons have been on the Galeazzo armor since the armor's retirement in the late 15th C, we are still faced with the undeniable fact that they are bigger than the ones on the Ulric armor. https://i.pinimg.com/564x/4f/f6/3a/4ff63a91153613b6226bb1c6818785e2.jpg We can lay a ruler against...

My suspicion about the wing is that it's a conscious attempt to back date the armor a bit. Everybody likes their antiques to be just a bit older than they really are.

That seems like a sort of weaselly way to say "the armor didn't have one, so we got one from somewhere else".

I wonder if it's an authentic piece, or something that a talented modern armorer has made up for the purpose.

So it looks to me, like the hosen could be laced to the doublet, and the entire thing was put on like a flight suit or overalls. This is like late 16th, early 17th C. garments, where the doublet was laced to the breaches and it was put on as a single garment. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ImVJHR9...

I had not considered the perceived importance of uniform armorer's marks. That is a hurdle that can not be overcome. The armorer's marks are a thing that anyone can see and understand, whereas the incorrectness of the size is a thing for a more discerning eye. In the end, It will be a triumph of ped...

That's because these pauldrons are too big for this armor. They probably should be on the "Big Ulric" armor, and vise versa

This looks like a good starting piece! https://i.imgur.com/fsfIaOs.jpg The only thing that concerns me a bit is the sharpness of the hammer marks. This is very interesting, but I have some reservations. All in all, I think I would advise not being an early adopter of this technology. The only thing I can add to the horror is that they are selling it with the wrong pauldrons. Those are really too big for it, and not coincidentally, the ones on "Big Ulric" are too small to have been Ulric's.
