I have seen and handled this stuff in person. As Star Wars costumes go, this stuff is high end. Not the floppy almost right stuff you can pick up at a costume shop. This stuff is as good or in some cases better than the armour worn in the actual movies. [nerd]The 501st only accepts high quality, mo...

I always try to just make sure that if nothing else I keep up with emails and stuff so that my customers don't see silence. That's worse than see them post on the Archive or whatever because it's like you dropped off the face of the earth. Then at least you can get answers to questions.

Not all newbies are soured by the award system or people with the shiny accoutrements. It depends a lot on how you begin in the SCA and who you learn the ropes from. I started out and the people that fostered me into the SCA were peers or close to it. So I saw those people as the ones to look up to ...

I diligently saved money for about 3 months before I ordered my helm. The only thing I did before then was price shop a bit to find someone who would do it in the price range I was looking for. I am amazed that people don't front up even a sizable portion for a commissioned item.

The customer is always right is such crap. I have always hated that saying. The meaning behind the saying is that a customer will seldom mention mediocre or normal service in good terms, but if you go out of your way to make them happy, even if they are being right patooties about it, they will oft...

It happens with pretty much everything. About half of the people who contact me I do designs for and never hear from again, sometimes doing several weeks of consultation. It's pretty much one of the major reasons I take the full amount up front and don't do deposits.

I wonder how much those little stickers they put on crash test dummies cost. Mythbusters use them and they're disposable and come in different calibrations. They're probably a lot cheaper.

The palisade idea is really cool but I'm not sure how you'd make it lightweight. I don't want to haul a lumber yard just for one event a year. Some kind of combination of low wooden fence and pointy logs would be okay I think. I haven't had the chance to really sit down and start digging through man...

The broken sword could just as easily have occurred because of a fault in the weapon. The thinking that it was purely because of technique is just a confirmational bias.

A lot of the time groups don't make a ton of money off sites fees but on silent auctions and such at the event. For small weekend type events anyway. Big wars are something else entirely.
