Re: Estrella Time!!!

I am really excited for this year! I haven't been practicing though because I thought I broke my hand just before Christmas and I ended up doing some nerve damage, so I have been taking it easy. I have been working out though and I am down 10 lb with only 4 more to go to hit my pre medic class weigh...

I have a Windrose style strap. That was the first time it has ever happened to me. I got rocked from Kansas.

Re: Helm Padding: Avoiding drain bramage.

Maybe I have a tender brain. I dunno. I tried several arrangements of it and did not have good results with it by itself. Are you padding your head to fit your helm or your helm to fit your head? This is a key problems I've found with MANY people having helm fit problems. Basically, they are paddin...

I just use canvas to face my shields with. I've done aluminum ones the same way. I cover the edging with the canvas then glue felt to the back to hide any ugliness.

Re: Helm Padding: Avoiding drain bramage.

The Windrose EVA foam is very stiff. I had just it in my helmet and I was getting headaches and seeing stars from normal shots. I ended up putting just the minimum of EVA foam in then making a padded fabric skullcap to take up the rest of the space.

Re: What makes a pair of greaves good?

I wear chausses and turnshoes or turnshoes and tights (if I'm feeling lazy) with my front only greaves. The top strap is above the thickest part of my calf, but also just below the crease in the knee, so that the strap from my knee cop doesn't interfere with the greave strap. I have been wearing the...

Re: Why don't Squires exist?

The point everyone is trying to make is that real rank and perceived rank aren't necessarily the same thing, and that how squires are seen can vary from Kingdom to Kingdom where someone with a white belt is generally seen the same way because of the authority that is passed to them by the Crown and ...

I'm not sure I would even recommend Illusion. Their delivery times are monumentally slow. I wouldn't order their stuff myself unless it was in stock. There's such a good list of armorers nowadays that they aren't in my top armorer list anymore. Ten years ago they were but even then it took a friend ...

Re: Why don't Squires exist?

How people perceive a thing does not make it so. People who are not a part of the structure of many of the SCA's institutions have a lot of weird ideas about them, but they are still wrong.

Re: Most effective helm padding?

I use a combination of harder and squishier that is working pretty well. Atenveldt requires foam, so the inner part is Windrose EVA foam, and then I have a quilted linen and cotton skullcap over that for comfort and a squishier layer. The foam by itself was too hard and everything was giving me a he...

Re: How did the men-at-arms in southern europe deal with hea

Well, there's a couple of ways to go about electrolyte replacement when you're doing intense physical activity or in the heat. You can drink water and eat a salty snack. You can drink any sports drink like gatorade along with water, or cut the gatorade with water if you're trying to avoid the sugar ...

Re: How did the men-at-arms in southern europe deal with hea

So the problem with drinking too much water is that you are diluting out the electrolytes in your body, primarily sodium, and it upsets the cellular balance of where your electrolytes are in the body. Your cells want to have a certain balance of water to salt, so if there is too much or not enough o...

Re: One day kit-How would you do it?

I shutter to imagine that a fighter might be wearing this same kit 3 or 5 years down the road. Honestly, my first DIY attempt at 14th C was already miles past what a good portion of SCA fighters wear. Most people put very little effort into their kit at all. A workshop like we are talking about in ...

Re: One day kit-How would you do it?

I think a brand new person without any experience CAN help with some tasks, like assembly. Anyone can smash together pop rivets to put together plastic stuff, mount straps, etc. I would put them to work doing easy stuff that you need a lot of, like putting the buckles on all the straps for a kit. Sh...

You could also make your own RTV molds and cast resin pieces instead. Smooth On carries all the stuff you would need, and you would probably make back what you would spend easily, looking at interest in this thread, and have a much more durable product in the end. They have a ton of set up and casti...

When I am going to be fighting during the summer months or I know I am hitting a fighting event with high temps I prepare several days in advance, making sure I am well hydrated and well nourished so when the time comes all I need to do is maintain that instead of trying to play catch up.
