Re: I hate that blue foam!
I did the same thing to my knees and elbows. Inside my helm there is black EVA foam, and then I made a smaller, quilted linen and cotton batting liner for comfort.

Re: How did the men-at-arms in southern europe deal with hea
Modern day people do it all the time. Fighter practice in Arizona doesn't just stop because it gets hot. You get used to it and make sure to hydrate. I don't really think it's hot out anymore unless it gets above 90 degrees. I was born in the Pacific Northwest but I have been down here long enough t...

Re: Removable, washable padding
If I were to be lining some kind of armor,I would probably quilt layers of cotton quilt batting because the ends won't fray badly, or do that with an outer shell of linen, then use hidden velcro because it's easy to replace.

I am interested in the smaller one. I am 6', 170 lb and it sounds like it would fit me great. I can do cash or trade or partial trade and cash for silk banners if you're interested in that at all too.

This is pretty much the norm for anyone making and selling a thing. I have folders and folders of banner mockups I did for people who never got back to me about them or never sent me funds so I could make their banner.

Re: Best armor design for a small woman
You can do a good impression from most of the spectrum of time periods in the SCA with a little research and elbow grease. Here are some articles on doing hidden armor and looking great on a budget. I don't really know what you have in mind to spend, but you can do effective armor for almost any tim...

One of my favorites is Eichling's Armor. You can see it at http://www.swordmaiden.net/home/arms-and-armor/eichlings-armor/ and since the pattern link is broken a quick google search turns up an archive of it at http://www.alonatwotrees.com/library/howto/eichling.pdf I have been looking for that pat...

Re: Best armor design for a small woman
Women wear a dazzling variety of armor types, so my advice would be to have her pick a time period and style that she likes and tailor the armor to fit that. Even if she wants to do early period, you can do hidden armor that will protect spots more likely to get broken on a petite or skinny person. ...

Re: Shield Basket Placement
I actually ditched the basket entirely because the way it was built was putting stress on my wrist and it hurt to use it. one of the local guys has the same problem and he doesn't use them anymore either. I went with straps and then made a covering to protect my hand similar to what I saw on Sir Mar...

I ditched the basket hilt altogether and solved a lot of my discomfort problem, but I also found the angle using Sir Corby's shield hanging tutorial.

Re: Soooo few fighting events for now :(
In Atenveldt it seems like there is a fighting event at least once a month, sometimes more than one, because of the concentration of large groups in such a small area. And there are several mega practices so you can find good fighting pretty much year round.

Here's the finished outfit. I made a spiff hood to go with it but it was too hot to wear. Also I ran out of steam on the last four buttons and left them undone. Re: Guy at pennsic with all the brass frufrus for helms
Setting up to cast in pewter isn't all that expensive but I haven't found a way to do brass yet and make it cost effective. I suppose if you have the ability to melt it in a forge already you're a good way there. Sand casting is not expensive or difficult, neither is lost wax, but whether or not it ...

It takes a ton of effort just to carve the master and casting in anything but pewter is expensive and requires more equipment.
