Re: Matched set of Basket hilts for auction from Hessen Iron
I feel pretty lucky to have one myself because he told me at the time he doesn't make very many of them. I've tried probably a half a dozen different basket hilts and the one I have made by Sir Stefhan is the only one I like.

Re: Need help figuring out how to fix my shield grip.
I used your tutorial to make it. :) The shield I made is a 2' x 3' standard size Aten heater. My elbow sits probably an inch past the balance point of the shield. It has nice fat straps on it because I learned how much I hated skinny arm straps with the very first shield I made. I haven't gotten a c...

Re: 3D printing for maiking molds and such?
It would be a cool way to be able to replicate masters from effigies and whatnot, but what kind of cost is involved for your average person? Mold making isn't too expensive for me, but damn if there is not a ton of labor involved.

Re: Zeke's big Idea too help the new people!
I feel the same way considering how much information is available online now. If I had to give a new person advice right now, I would tell them to relax. Don't spend a bunch of money yet. Spend some time hanging out and getting to know what the SCA is all about. There's so much to learn when you tak...

Re: Zeke's big Idea too help the new people!
Books are great and all but information evolves so quickly now that I think online resources are better for what you're interested in doing. Anyone can build even a good looking website now with the tools available at most major hosting companies and you can keep information up to date with way less...

Openings in silk banner queue for the holidays.
Hey everybody. I am shipping out 5 orders between today and tomorrow, which will be most of what I currently have in my queue. So if you'd like to order a banner for yourself or as a gift for the holidays which are soon here, now is a good time to get started. I am currently making 6' and 8' standar...

You can get 1/8" black abs plastic pretty cheap on ebay. Search for the seller Norva Plastics. That's where I got mine.

Re: WTB Armstreet Slavic Helm - How's the quality of their w
If you're interested in buying from an armorer in the US, Aesyr Metalworks does badass helms in Eastern styles too. Also, a lot of people will tell you that fighting in a closed face helm like that really isn't as big a deal as some people make it out to be. Personally I don't think you are being ri...

Re: Japanese armor for a new fighter
You can make a lot of your own stuff out of plastic but it takes a lot of time and elbow grease. That will help keep costs down to save for the stuff that is a hell of a lot harder to make, like a helmet.

Re: Need help figuring out how to fix my shield grip.
I used Sir Corby's method except for how I went about making the grip.
I am still experimenting to find a style of shield and way of hanging it that I like, so who knows. I didn't really start working on fighting singles until recently.

I tape mine down with strapping tape, once over the top both front and back, then I tape around it with strapping tape. Then I tape over the whole thing with duct tape.

Re: Need help figuring out how to fix my shield grip.
I saw something like it on Sir Mari's shield. Sir Vitus made me some demi gauntlets and when I get them I may engineer a removable clamshell like thingy that matches when I have some extra time. But I thought this was a decent compromise in the mean time and doesn't look too awful.

Re: Need help figuring out how to fix my shield grip.
I could not make the shield baskets I have work in any way. I ended up just going with leather straps and making them fit good and tight, which was a massive improvement. I engineered a little hand cover out of some scrap leather and plastic I had sitting around. It's not the greatest solution but f...

Re: Need help figuring out how to fix my shield grip.
I would rather see a metal basket, than a damn hockey glove. If I walked out onto the field in my kit with a hockey glove I'd get a ration of shit, and rightly so. I basically made a little shaped plastic flap, padded it with felt and covered it with leather. It will have a little strap that you hol...

Re: Need help figuring out how to fix my shield grip.
I'll get a picture of it when it's all done but it should do the job. I think the basket is just overall built for someone with much bigger hands. I had the same problem with basket hilts until I got one from Sir Stefhan von Hessian that he had just sitting around his shop collecting dust. It's perf...

I made myself a little plastic hand cover thingamajig like I saw on Sir Mari's shield. I covered it in leather dyed to match the rest of my kit. Beats the hell out of a hockey glove I think. F the basket hilt. I can't get it to work.

Re: Need help figuring out how to fix my shield grip.
I have reached the conclusion that the basket hilts I have are just not designed for my use. The handle sits too far off the surface of the shield and no matter how I tilt it or shim it, it still sucks. I threw a crappy leather strap on it and got instant better results. X( I did change the alignmen...

So, with a shield basket, the handle sits at straight angle, perpendicular to the plane of the shield. It's at an angle that when I am gripping it, my wrist hurts and feels twisted. I'm having a hard time describing what I mean, but Jess reminded me that in the interview for Modern Medieval, Sir Rau...

I would not hit somebody in the same unarmored or lightly armored spot over and over again in practice because I think it's discourteous, but I always advise someone who doesn't wear leg armor and is new to wear leg armor. My first question would be where did the fighter who complained get hit and w...

I'm making a new shield for myself and before I go through all the work of covering it and everything, I need to fix my grip problem so I am not drilling an excessive number of holes in it. One of the hardest lessons every craftsman or artist has to learn is how to take criticism without taking it personally. If you can do it though it will help you improve your craft.
