Lol. I didn't realize my toes made it in the pic too.

I wish I could have included everybody, but I tried to pick people I knew by sight or reputation or who had interesting kits/arms.

Re: Silk Banner tutorial

You could probably just use a regular acrylic craft paint and it would work fine. On the ironing experiment... I ironed a test piece with the water based Jacquard resist without any problems. I used the silk setting on my iron and went right on the finished banner piece without any problems or mess....

Re: NEED TUTORIAL: mold-making

I put together a tutorial on sandcasting a while back and I had it in pdf form, I just can't find it at the moment. When I get home I'll look on my backup discs and see if I can find it. I have some printed copies but I can't find the digital one at the moment. In the mean time, youtube to the rescu...

Re: NEED TUTORIAL: mold-making

Lost wax would work well too. If you need to reproduce a bunch of the same thing you could make a silicone mold to pour wax in to so you have a bunch of wax masters that are all exactly the same.

For iron you could do sandcasting. Check out this site:

Making a two piece mold with sand is a little more challenging though. I've never quite worked it out.

Re: NEED TUTORIAL: mold-making

Probably the easiest thing to do would be to make an RTV mold. I just bought the sample size of this stuff for pewter casting: http://www.smooth-on.com/a59/Mold-Max%3D-60-Higher-Heat-Resistant-Silicone/article_info.html They have a bunch of good mold making tutorials with pictures on their site. htt...

Re: Silk Banner tutorial

I think the problem you're having is that the resist you've been using is supposed to do that. I went and read the info on Dharma's page and it is meant to wash out mostly so the fabric has no weird feel from the resist, but it leaves a greyish line there instead. The water based resist I use is the...

I'm taking orders for post Pennsic delivery now. I have a few people that would be ahead of you, but I only have 1 more banner to finish for Pennsic delivery so the queue is pretty short. silkbanners@gmail.com

Why not just wear some hidden forearm protection? Lots of people do with pretty awesome results. Here's some threads about hidden armor.

Re: Taking orders for silk banners. Pre Pennsic delivery.

I am not lucky enough to have one of these banners (even if I hope that will change in the future), however I must say that those look downright amazing. I wish I had an idea of what I would want on a banner that looked even nearly as cool =). The artwork on those is astounding. Most of the time it...

I think I used the super 77. I did the whole thing with spraying both the fabric and the shield and waiting before sticking them together. They had to soak the shield in the bathtub for hours to get it off.

Re: Trim Lock shield edging - Where do I find it?

You don't need to lace it or stitch it at all if you're going to glue canvas on the front and prime and paint it. I would recommend maybe reinforcing at least the top edge with a strip of leather or rawhide though. I've seen the trim lock blow out and split under heavy use on spots that get hit a lo...

With pewter if your mold and master are super smooth they come out really shiny. I noticed a huge difference in brilliance when I switched from and casting to soapstone.

Re: Silk Banner tutorial

Sounds interesting. I know there are some other resist type techniques that employ one that washes out or comes out with the use of heat or chemicals.

I do know the rubber rests will come off if you dry clean your banner.

Re: Silk Banner tutorial

I've never tried misting the silk myself because it's so dry here it evaporates really quickly. The only thing I would worry about with that would be if there is water on the resist lines, you could get dye jumping from one area to another through the moisture. I have some scraps laying around. I wi...

I just glued the felt around the edges directly to my armor with contact cement. My finger gauntlets are padded the same way with 2 layers of scrap melton wool. Mine's just glued in, no stitching or extra padding. 2 layers provided a surprising amount of cushion. My arms and legs are splinted 1/8" a...

Re: Silk Banner tutorial

For about $100 you can get all the basic colors and supplies to make about 5 6' banners. One way to save a little on it would be to go in with a small group of people if you only want one or two for yourself and just have a banner making workshop. To get the most out of your fabric you can also make...

They say they are in the back because they are kind of hanging out behind your other organs. They aren't even in the same sac in your body as the rest of your guts. They also don't have the protection of as much connective tissue, so they move around a lot more and can get banged up a little easier....
