Re: New female fighter - looking for gambeson patterns, etc.

I made an unpadded arming coat from the same pattern a friend helped me fit for a 14th century fitted dress. Mine laces in the front. You definitely want to go with natural fibers like linen on cotton, and if you have someone near you who has more sewing experience, they can probably help you with p...

Silk Banner tutorial

Somebody a while back suggested I film a silk banner making tutorial and put it up on YouTube and I finally got around to it. I'm still editing the videos in between other projects, when I have time, but here is the first installment. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=64skzLn6Gh8&list=UUcGI9zdgF7Mn_01G...

Midwest Tents, Panther Primitives and Tentsmiths are all reputable. You might be able to find someone selling one used as well through ebay, facebook, craigslist, etc.

Re: 2012...Show us your kits

If you want to make tweaks you could probably take the straps off and trim the leather a bit for a better fit. Also, if you curve the top and bottom it will give you a better shape around the wrists. The first vambraces I bought were too long and not tapered enough and generally just did not work. I...

Re: 2012...Show us your kits

Pretty damn good for a first kit to be honest. Three things stand out to me. Stand up straight! Your vambraces are a little fat at the bottom. Could just be a strapping issue or too much material down there but more taper will give you a better fit. More cone, less tube shaped if that makes sense. A...

I lot of deaf people don't know ASL, and according to a friend of mine who works with an interpreter because one of her students is deaf, ASL varies regionally too.

I have never done that, but I totally would for somebody who wanted it. :P It would be pretty cool to do a later period manuscript piece for an award with that theme. I've done lots of little battle scenes for martial awards though. I'm working on filming a series of silk banner tutorial videos. The...

I live in the desert, but even sitting in occasional humidity, being wet from sweat, sitting in the grass, etc and in the bottom of a bin and generally abused I've never had mine develop even a spot of rust.

That's pretty much what I did to make my patterns. I used old jeans and taped them up tight to make the pattern for my cuisses, then transferred them to poster board. Here is a thread with some info and step by step pics. http://www.createforum.com/thegirlsclub/viewtopic.php?t=1218&mforum=thegirlsclub

Re: Trying to figure out which direction to go...

The biggest thing with plastic imo to avoid pain and lots of bruising is adequate padding underneath. Whatever you get, try padding the under side of the plastic with either padded cuisses or glue a couple of layers of wool or felt to the back of the plastic. My experience with unpadded plastic is a...

Re: Highlands war, and sunglasses

There is a lot of special snowflake crap in the SCA, don't get me wrong. I'm not saying there isn't. But telling somebody they should go find another activity to do is a bit over the top. However there is really no medieval solution that is going to make any sense with most people's personas anyway....

I have no problem being outdoors. I am out of doors all the time. That's kind of a crap thing to say. I just like trying to avoid the headaches that I am prone to through little fault of my own. If people can deal with all the modern bs that is at any given SCA event, I don't see why sunglasses are ...

I've tried the hat to make shade thing but it doesn't work well enough for me to not wear sunglasses. If I have even a ghost of a headache lurking (which is more days than not) standing around squinting for a few hours is enough to make it worse.
