Edging doesn't have to be ugly. You can just use better edging, like leather or rawhide, or cover your edging and do a nice paint job.

Why not just buy sheets of plastic instead? I bought 1/8" abs from this seller on ebay super cheap. I ended up with enough plastic to make almost a whole kit for 2 people. I glue a couple layers of felt right to the plastic. I have my legs and arms padded that way and it takes a surprising amount of oomph out of a shot.

The rules are constantly evolving based on new materials, information, construction techniques, changes in the needs of the Society, etc. They are not today entirely what they were 40 years ago. If you mean that is harmonious, then yeah, I would say the system is working as intended.
