Do your research before you buy anything. There are many threads here about how to look decent even on a tight budget. Here's a couple of threads to get you started. I pressed mine in the summer and went out and watered the shield while it was hot out.

Re: Best wood for shield

I have a huge shield press in the garage that works great, and is all fancy and complicated which someone else built and I snagged when they moved. But I built my first shield press out of scrap lumber in a couple hours. I had a hard time getting 1/2" ply to bend without breaking at a certain depth,...

Re: An interview with Sir Mari and Sir Rauokinn

Watched it today. There's a lot of good information there that I think can really help new fighters. I hadn't seen the tip about the shield handle before though and I'd been having the exact problem so I will have to try changing the angle as a solution when I make my next shield. I've always felt l...

You can buy a lot of things on the internet but a new brain isn't one of them. Spending a decent amount on a helm is just a good investment. ;)

I would not trust my noggin to that helmet. There's no details on sizing or construction, or even what gauge steel it's made out of. You're better off buying a helmet that is made for SCA combat by a reputable armorer.

I can't wait to watch it. I would have already if I didn't have a huge pile of reading and homework to do before tomorrow. Re: My Pell...

I work for a fire department so it was free. You can probably call around to departments in your area and score some. Old hose that fails testing can't be repaired often gets cut up and used for stuff and many departments have it laying around.

Re: My Pell...

You can make a decent hanging pell out of large diameter firehose stuffed with old clothes too. Drill holes in the ends and bolt shut, and a hole for your rope to hang it with. No bounce back like some other materials and lasts forever.

I stitched leather tabs onto my arming coat too. The laces don't go through the fabric at all, just the leather.

Windrose, Anshelm and Icefalcon Armories all have them. Their prices are all pretty close to each other and if one doesn't have them in stock the others usually will.

I put leather tabs on mine and just ran the ties through it instead of fiddling with putting eyelets in the armor.

Re: Ways to deal with non period camps around in the SCA

My Panther marquee has been through numerous incredibly wet Arizona monsoon seasons and it's never leaked. If you tuck your floor between the sod flaps like you're supposed to, you shouldn't have any problems. If you are lazy and don't set your tent up properly you're going to possibly get some wate...

Re: Ways to deal with non period camps around in the SCA

Set the bar for your kingdom and others will try to jump it. This is true even for small groups. One or two of us bought Panther pavilions one year in Windale and it's been about five years and they have multiplied, the Shire bought a larger Panther for the group, and several people have build Vard...

I saw that too, it's really cool. I've been mulling over how to build a break down house thing for years, or some that's already built but on a flat bed that you somehow remove from the trailer intact, but I haven't worked out some of the logistical problems yet.

If you're having trouble keeping your legs up, making or buying a c belt can solve a lot pf problems. It's pretty easy to make one. I used heavy canvas for the first one and wore it for a while before I could afford the leather to make a better one. http://www.createforum.com/thegirlsclub/viewtopic....

Re: Question re: shield painting

It will help protect the paint job but I think it probably also seeps in to the paint and canvas and helps keep it from tearing. I've done 3 different shields like that so far and they can take a hell of a beating.

In terms of injury prevention, there's a lot of reasons why wearing some kind of leg armor is a good idea that doesn't have anything to do with broken bones.

I'd love to see it but at least around here it seems to me that much earlier period or non chivalric type personas are a lot more common than people who already have stuff fit for a Pas style get together.
